HouseBoats/Barges

We are looking at hiring a houseboat/barge in France (we have been told the North of France has less traffic). Has anyone hired one and would like to know if it is recommended and any appreciated suggestions as to where to go and who to hire it from. Thanks!!

Re: HouseBoats/Barges

I rented on the Canal du Midi a couple of years ago. Absolutely excellent and not too busy anyway. Weather was good. Damn fine.

I don't recall the company but will rack the grey cells. They do rentals all over France and in the Norfolk Broads too....not Hoseason I think but I don't recall who it was....

Re: HouseBoats/Barges

Hi,

decided to revive this post as hiring a houseboat for a canal might be an option for the upcoming holidays.
Any recent experience? Any recommendation for route, boat size, difficulty to barge for non experienced?
Thanks for your replies

In France we have hired at Tonnerre on the Canal de Bourgogne but there were many locks, and we were always very busy, with a lock every hour,

Another year we hired from Prom. du port, Saint-Jean-de-Losne, France. This was much better, boating on the River Sa˘ne, & going upstream, only about one lock each day. Highly recommended!

There is also a boatyard nearby, at Gray, which looked even better, as some of the boring parts would then be avoided,

Next to the rivers and canals is usually a towpath, it is worthwhile taking or hiring a bicycle, to get fresh bread from the village in the mornings.

It is worth keeping one room free for everyone: some boats have a bed in the saloon, day room, and in my opinion this makes life difficult: as every night everything has to be moved about and the bed made up, and then tidied away again before breakfast.

I have heard the Canal du Midi has very high reeds, and you cannot see very much of the landscape, maybe it is better now.

Thank you for the useful info. When I will find the button I will do so in the forum...
