requesting computer advice

hello ef!

maybe you can help me here - i'm looking for tips, advice, suggestions about buying a new laptop. mine has just kapput, so it's time to buy another. i'm no expert and it's pretty obvious there are some people on here who know a lot about them.

i'm such a novice i couldn't even tell you the specs i need, although basically i guess i don't need any radical ones - just a basic laptop with internet access and word processing capabilities. i definitely can't afford a high-end machine but i'd like a sturdy lasting one!

do migros sell those cheap budget ones all year or at specific times?

anyway, all info gratefully recieved

Re: requesting computer advice

for example, do you think these laptops are any good and will last a reasonable time? im referring to the ones between 300 and 400 francs

also - i don't mind buying second hand if it's a reasonable thing to do, like when you buy cars. for example, this computer:

http://www.ricardo.ch/kaufen/compute...dFeatureKey=59 this computer looks pretty powerful, processing ability i doubt i'll ever need, but i wondered if the power extends to its components meaning it would last longer.

again - thanks for any time

Re: requesting computer advice

Well since you are Zurich it'll be really hard to get a laptop with an English or American keyboard. Importing a laptop from America can cost you on tax if it's declared or found when it comes in so buying one locally is probably less hassle and to be honest, I haven't seen much price difference in laptops between Switzerland and other countries when you factor in taxes and logistics. Maybe driving to Germany is cheapest but I've never tried that.

Migros electronics is a great place to look.

So you will have a laptop with a Swiss German keyboard. A bit of a pain but you can soon learn to live with it.

Another random advice is to not activate the bloatware anti-virus programs you get with all laptops these days. They are a con. Use Microsoft security essentials, it's free, reliable and less intrusive.

Good luck

Re: requesting computer advice

regarding microsoft sec essentials - this comes free with the microsoft OS which is standard in all computers right? except apple stuff anyway. and i'd have to pay extra to get that OS included? (novice alert!)

Re: requesting computer advice

Don't bother with used. There are plenty of good new computers at reasonable prices. Melectonics and Interdiscount are a good start. Note that many will not have Office included, so you will neec to buy or install an existing copy, or use freeware equivalents. Smaller screen size will save money. The only specific advice I can offer is do NOT get an ASUS. We hate ours. We are not big gamers, but the processing speed and video driver leave a lot to be desired.

Re: requesting computer advice

We have Acer, Asus and HP laptops at home. Not really had any issues with any of them - but the Acer (despite inferior speakers) do seem most robust.

I'm thinking of getting one of these for my daughter:

Uses Linux rather than windows, so you get a better computer for your money (linux is free, windows isn't). Suse linux is quite easy to use.

If you want really easy to use, then you can lock yourself into Apple stuff.

Re: requesting computer advice

Try Fust (fust.ch), interdiscount (interdiscount.ch) or for a comparison of prices try toppreise.ch
I think you could get a low-end one for about 500 CHF
