Birth certificates less than 6 months old?

I'm seeing more and more often people saying that the "officials" of this world seem to need copies of birth certificates that are less than 6 months old to process documentation. Does anyone have any idea why the situation has changed from just providing your original or a certified copy that isn't less than 6 months in the making?

Given how easy, at least in the UK, it is to order anyone's birth certificate I would have thought the older the copy the better.

Re: Birth certificates less than 6 months old?

I asked a Consul at the British Embassy about 25 years ago why we have to supply new certificates. She replied she spends
a lot of her time explaining to foreigners that British certificates do not expire: they have an embossed seal.

Inferior foreign certificates have a stamp and date, and these have a limited shelf life.

Re: Birth certificates less than 6 months old?

I needed a "less than 6 months" one for getting married, yet the Gemeinde accepted the original for my B-permit.

So does my American one, as well as having my fingerprints and footprints. And that was done back in the early 50s!

Not only that but now we are having to supply new documents, but also to get the Hague Apostille certification for them!

We had an Apostille certified marriage certificate which is two years old (plus our birth certificates) - but now in order to register the birth of our baby will require a whole new set of certified ones!! Yes, we could invoke the Hague convention and tell them that they have to accept the old one, but lets face it, it's easier just to do as they ask

You see, that's what doesn't make sense to me. You have one already so why do you need a newer version of the same thing? Has the wording changed? Is it in a different format? It's more like they're trying to make work to keep people employed.

luckily the officials we have dealt with haven't required any of that silliness - although we never had a child here and needed a birth certificate.

Re: Birth certificates less than 6 months old?

Well, I hope I never need to get one because I'm not sure where I'd get it from these days! I have an American one - but I'm now ex-US - and I have a record of a birth abroad from the British Embassy. But those as far as I know aren't held at the General Registry Office in the UK. So would I get an American copy even though I'm no longer American or try and get something from the British?

Re: Birth certificates less than 6 months old?

Not sure how long ago you are talking Medea but we registered our daughter's birth at the Embassy in Bern and it is definitely recorded in the GRO in the UK as we needed a copy from them for our jumping through hoops exercise to get to Brazil

Re: Birth certificates less than 6 months old?

I would dare to suggest it's because they want to keep them. It's not just the Swiss that need a recent copy - they actually keep them.

I have my original birth certificates. I think nobody would want them but me.

Oh and I also believe that the forgery skills and techniques are leading to this. Old, original documents are easier to forge than newly-created documents with new anti-forgery measures.

About "I have my original birth certificates" - How many do you have?

I have my original birth certificate with postage stamp on it & a genuine signature in ink.
I had to provide a certificate less than 6 months old for the Swiss authorities - what did I get? A poor quality photo -copy of my original!!

It hasn't changed, it's always been that way (at least in the 27+ years that I've been here).

And it's not just for foreigners, it works the same for Swiss.
