How to behave on an internet forum

How to behave in an internet forum

Nicely explained and I think mostly applicable to EF.

Compulsory viewing for Noobs! (and people who complain about this place!)

Possibly NSFW since you need sound and there is a pair of cartoon breasts shown at one point.

Could be just me but the voice of the guy was very irritating and the message very patronizing. Perfect for creating an army of little well behaved internet minions. His voice and tone were equivalent of using ALL CAPS

P.S- Just to clarify I have nothing against the rules on this forum or the mods Just my crit of the video.

I think you've maybe taken the bait on that one - the dude is just a bit famous for taking the mick out of games and gamers - as for the voice, he's not called zero-punctuation for nothing .

I think that is done on purpose as:

1. He is portraying a computer/internet geek, and geeks are patronising. Well, we have to be. Obviously out knowledge of technology makes us superior to everybody else in every possible way. But frustratingly enough patronising people is the only way to demonstrate to them how superior we are.

2. It adds humor to the video. No really, it does. Trust me, if you where a real geek you would understand..... Oh, forget it...

3. It expresses the frustration all geeks feel when encountering n00bs who don't know all the rules that we have carefully hidden and disguised with jargon that non techies cannot possibly understand if they actually have a life.

But, don't worry. One day us geeks will rule supreme, swim in pools of money and have beautiful women throwing themselves at us.

Oh, hang on, that's right. That happened in 1998 and only lasted for three years. Sorry, I was too busy playing Quake deathmatch in my mum's basement and missed the whole thing.

You'll notice that everything I post is either funny or interesting. Usually, of course, it's both....

the questions is - do you respect the admins? After all, it's their forum and you're just a visitor....

Re: How to behave on an internet forum

That was great. I like what it said at the end too about: "Keep your tongue firmly in your cheek and get a nice thick skin." Sounds like good advice to me.

And did you catch the "bonus" items... (I can think of a few that may want to consider the Avatar one, hmmmmmm)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! It turns out there's even more annoying stuff people do that we simply couldn't squeeze into the film...
Step 12: ===Signatures===
...should be small and tasteful. Massive graphics plugging something you're selling are a right royal no-no. Text is very much preferable.

Step 13: ===Avatars===
Your profile pic is how people picture you, so choose something good-looking, funny or interesting. Pretty much anything goes, just make sure it isn't ugly or annoying and fits with the tone of the forum.

Step 14: ===Gravedigging===
Old threads are old for a reason, and that reason is that noone's interested in discussing that anymore. Unless you've got an outrageously good reason to do so, leave dead threads to Rest in Peace.

Step 15: ===Drama===
Used properly, The Internet can be a tool for good. If used for overblown, melodramatic weepy Emo nonsense, it's ruined and needs to be scrubbed clean. Learn to relax and take everything in your stride. Noone's on The Internet to get all stressed and angsty, we're all just here for a good time. So leave all your haughty drivel at the door.

Step 16: ===Smilies===
If used sparingly a smiley can emphasise a point: sarcasm comes across extremely poorly in forums – almost dangerously so. A quick winky will sort that. Reams and reams of extravagant animated smileys performing all manner of wacky acts are annoying, and are the sort of thing your mum would do, were she able to use a computer.

Step 17: ===Read the FAQ and Forum Rules===
Because they'll tell you how the community there likes people to act. They're there for a reason.

Re: How to behave on an internet forum

i know that what I am doing is grave digging, but we seem to be getting a lot of repeat questions lately.
There are also currently a lot of newbies.

i STILL find this post interesting and useful, even tho it is over a year old.

Hi, I think it is useful.Important to notice also is that sometimes posters forget to put tags on their threads so then it makes it difficult to follow them or find them. Please correct me if I am worng about this???

Tchuus!

Re: How to behave on an internet forum

If you see Threads which would be really useful to other members, but which do not have relevant Tags, I think the OP can add them later if you ask him/her. Otherwise, you can always let a Mod know (or PM me) and they can be put on. If you give your suggestions for Tags and the link to the Thread, it is quite quickly done.
