[I'm moving to] Belgium, anyone know of similar forums?

Hello expats,

I will probably leave switzerland soon to move to Belgium, in the Brussels area.
Do you know of any community similar to EF?
I have some family in Brussels, but I'd like to have some starting point for my research.

Thanks everyone!

Re: [I'm moving to] Belgium, anyone know of similar forums?

don't know of any similar fora for Brussels, but with the EU, there is a lot of expats. Plenty of them are interns and thus young and outgoing and it should be no problem to easily hook up with some people. There's a couple of Irish pubs in the EU area (Schuman) where there's always plenty of expats (all nationalities) hanging out: Wild Geese (wild indeed!), Hairy Canary, James Joyce.
However, the locals are much more interesting to hang out with, ofcourse
for the flemish community, try the bars around the Place St. Catherine in the centre: Monk, Roskam, Daringman (and say hi from me)
for the walloon community, try the bars around the Halles St. Géry (also in the centre, close to the Bourse): Roi des Belges, Mapa Mundo, Bar Central,...

mind you, it's pure coincidence that I map out Brussels for you by its bars ,
if you need other info, pm me.

So can you cope with living in a multilingual country with inferior beer and chocolate?

Cheers,
Nick

@AbFab: Come on, give me some credit
@Moderators: thanks for changing the title of the topic. Note to self: never open topics so early in the morning.

I could research on the websites of the main belgian newspapers and it seems that the price of a decent flat in the center of brussels is way lower than prices in Zurich, which is a GOOD thing.
From what I saw walking in town eating out and foodshopping has prices in line with other european cities, VAT is 16% IIRC.
The information I am really missing for an effective salary evaluation is taxation. How much taxes would a ~50000EUR/year salary pay? I am pretty sure it's somewhere in between Switzerland and Germany (35-40%?) but I'd like some first hand experience.

Thanks for anyone's help.

Re: [I'm moving to] Belgium, anyone know of similar forums?

I lived 4 years in Brussels and was taxed around 48%, which sucked ass. Also be prepared to deal with the most inefficient bureaucracy on the planet, the rule of thumb is "what can go wrong, will go wrong....in Belgium". I don't want to rain on your parade but Belgium is a country I'd never ever in my life move back to, too many negative experiences. Crime is also common in Brussels, especially burglaries and car theft. On the plus side you have plenty of restaurants, proper french fries and way better beer than in Switzerland, that must count for at least something. If you have any questions just pm me.

ps. the opinions expressed above are based on MY experiences, other people I know have had better ones.

Your research skills need some work! VAT is 21%.
Your total deductions would be around the 50% mark.

Oh, & just for balance: I would definitely move back to Belgium if the right opportunity came up.

Re: [I'm moving to] Belgium, anyone know of similar forums?

Thanks everyone for the kind answers. As for those who suggest PMs, I prefer to have answers visible to everyone so please follow this thread

I am not "thrilled" about Belgium to be completely honest, but the job I'm trying to get really is close to my dream job, so I'm willing to compromise a bit.
I mean, if I could pick I'd move to Spain but I guess you don't always get what you want!

What about public transport? I could try trains and metro, and both looked cheap enough and on time, albeit quite dirty. I'm not a huge fan of commuting by car so I'd rather go to work by bus than buying a car.

If you want to move to Spain, then you'll appreciate Belgium. It's like Spain but not as good weather.

Here's a link that could be interesting:

http://www.heritage.org/research/fea.../countries.cfm

It strikes me funny that Switzerland is designed as "Mostly free" with a low score in income taxation, but hey, I don't really understand anything in economics.

Re: [I'm moving to] Belgium, anyone know of similar forums?

When we lived in Brussels we found http://www.xpats.com/ invaluable.

If you need any more advise then please feel free to ask, we had a good year there and found a particuklarly nice appartment in Schaerbeek, an area that everyone tells you to avoid but in truth is really quite pleasant.

PS. Trains there are atrocious, so if you are going to be working outside the reach of the tram system then seriously consider getting accomodation close by to your work. I would estimate that about 40% of the time I was delayed by either strikes, faulty machinary, or for reasons for which no explanation was forthcoming.

It is in today's news that Belgium has some of the highest income taxes in Europe. A single worker can be charged up to 55% of his income!

I'll have to haggle very well...

It took me a while, but it might be interesting to others at some point in life. Expatica has a nice forum that might be helpful to expats in various countries.
