Unsolicited marketing phone calls

"You have won a cruise" call from 0019724900000

Don't press 9, hangup.
I hear the scam costs you about €800 - and there is no cruise......

And I am unlisted with a 4-week-old number.

Mind you, some geezer believes he needs to call me from Turkey......Happy Christmas to you too, repeatedly-calling Turkish dude

Re: "You have won a cruise" call from 0019724900000

I'm guessing the scam can only cost you if you go along with whatever further stuff they try and trick you with, because as far as I'm aware there's no mechanism to bill you like that from an inbound call.

I guess that's the problem with the rapidly sinking cost of telecommunications, it becomes easy to scam and pester people all over the globe.

I was in Australia recently and saw posters advertising 0.5c per minute calls to pretty much everywhere, including countries like China and India, as well as Switzerland. That means that you could use that service to call Switzerland from Australia for around CHF0.27 for an hour. Hang on... that's what a 3 minute local call costs here.... Something isn't right....

Re: "You have won a cruise" call from 0019724900000

LOL.. this is a funny prank.

I haven't been targetted to a scam yet, but I usually take my time with the telemarketers. Especially after a long day of work or school. Most of them have an IQ of a stone, so you can imagine how easy it is to mess with them.

One time I offered the lady a "deal" which I recieved from a Nigerian spammer on my morning email. She got very excited, but our conversation ended when I asked for her info so I can mail it to her. Apparently the $100 million waiting to be wired out to any interested non-Nigerian is not worth her real name and address... hmm.. either that or she's a Nigerian too, which ofcourse voids her claims

Re: "You have won a cruise" call from 0019724900000

but who is it that's calling? and from where? do they just call random people? they just called me a few minutes ago. i gave the phone to my sister and she pressed 9.. then this woman ivory or something started talking. but at the same time i said "it could be a prank call" so my sister had do reply "what" to the lady, and "ivory" hung up. why would she hang up? how do they get your phonenumber. i don't now about you, but i live in sweden. did i perhaps write my phonenumber on any community page where they would get it? since the lady, or whatever, hung up, we won't get a huge phone bill now, will we?
thankful for answer.

Re: "You have won a cruise" call from 0019724900000

Best thing is to call your phone company and ask them. They probably got your number from the phone book or by dialing at random. I'm doubtful that you could get a big bill from them, but every phone system may not be the same in every country, so best to ask yours to be sure.

Most likely your number will be recorded as someone who follows instructions and you'll start getting calls from other telemarketing people trying to sell you all sorts of other rubbish...

Re: "You have won a cruise" call from 0019724900000

This is a classic scam apart from they are giving you an international number to call so you must be wrong in the head to use it. Usually it is a freephone number or a local number which has a recorded message giving you another premium number. At this point it costs and often you go round in circles with recorded messages until you realise you have heard that message before...

Though in this case you are just asked to press 9, so merely pressing 9 can't result in any charges.

Interesting fact - since this thread appeared a few days ago I've noticed 43 hits from search engines for this phone number appear in the statistics. So obviously people are seeing this phone number and googling it. I checked google and found this page ranks number 1 for this search term. Anyway, here's someone's blog with about 100 different comments on this issue:

Well those tossers are calling us in Sweden as well. Read in the newspaper yesterday, that someone in my hometown had fallen for it and lost a lot of cash (from his VISA).

The key with these calls, apparently according to the blog (or several entries posted to it) is that pressing 9 and leaving the phone means that you can have no charges to you and keep the connection open.

Sounds rather splendid; I'm waiting for them to call me back

But the question is how? Does it go further and they get tricked into something else. The solution is simple - this guy calls his credit card company and complains and he gets the amount refunded - not so difficult!

Damn - this just happened to me. Read it about it on english forum - then it happens... Freaky.

One thing I noticed however - there was no "1" in the number. It was 00972.. I sat there thinking - which country is +972.

Anyway, I hung up after a few seconds.

Spam/Cold Phone Calls to your Mobile

I had a call in the office this morning but was unable to get my phone out of my pocket in time to answer it (not an uncommon experience unfortunately )

It was from a number i didn't recognise +44 292 035 9001.

Before ringing back I thought I would find out where it came from. After a bit of Googling, I came across this website...

http://vinlai.com/blog/cold-callers-spam-numbers.html

Well worth reading if you've been experiencing cold calls and don't know how they got hold of your details. You are not alone!

It seems incredible. I've added my tuppence worth to the list of comments.

Has anyone on this forum experienced this?

Cheers LR

On a slightly different subject bought up by reading through the thread I saw that Mark made some pretty sceptical comments on how cheap calls can be from Australia. ( though I appreciate that was some time ago now)

Well although you can't beat Skype imo, it is possible to make such calls from UK landlines that are very very cheap to make compared to normal BT prices. It sometimes involves just dialling another number first.

For anyone not aware, here's a pretty good guide to how cheap those prices can be..

Maybe you want to pop in here, Tim?
Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

Also search Skype or VOIP for quite a few threads
