Re: Where is this place?

The folk story goes that in 1595 one of the Memel Castle guards met a hooded ghost who asked him about the city’s supply of grain and timber and if the amount was sufficient? The guard replied that supplies were indeed enough, but the hooded ghost warned the guard that the stocks would soon be insufficient, and with that as quickly as he appeared, it vanished.

Nowadays people place coins in the lantern as a way to tip the dock workers.

Let's see if its more known neighbor on the same site will be easier.

OK, judging by the orientation, is it somewhere near the equator?

My cell keeps stubbornly laying down the stand up photos I took, when I am attaching them.

Wow, that was fast to go from the Equator to the North pole!

Did they have any pics of the collapse, back in the '80s?

Indeed - of course they did. They do tours and lovingly elaborate on every single one of them! The fallen one was long overdue so the collapse was expected, material fatigue they said. It is all extraordinary. It is a great student summer job place, too.

To an erection engineer there are only two interesting times for such structures: When it goes up, and when it goes down. The rest is just maintenance.

There is one exception to the above: that is when you are somewhere on vacation and you can say to the kids "See that big white thing? Daddy built that." There is however a downside to this: When they say they want you to help them make a submarine or a rocket in the backyard, you can't easily fob them off with a bit of cardboard and some Aluminum foil. You may not actually have to make the thing fly, or submerge, but you have to come pretty damn close.

Re: Where is this place?

I don't think a real radio telescope maniac worries about shrugging kids off with some fake cardboard thing at the back yard. I think they can't wait to have kids to introduce them to the monsters they discretely had built in the garden long before the kids came.

It is interesting that the first receivers didn't seem to be built to search for the "noise" coming outside of the Earth, but to figure out mapping the interference that was "ours".

There is so much out there, beyond our lousy human hearing and seeing capabilities.

Indeed, particularly if you think of the state of "electronics" at the time.
