Re: Omega watch service

by removing the serial numbers you're making the watch worthless, end of story. no one in their right minds would buy it, and no legit watch shop will touch it.

Not necessarily. Grey market dealers would remove the serial numbers in order to discount the watches, something the manufacturers did not permit. Without the serial numbers, the discounted watches could not be traced back.

No because when still living in the US, the watch was actually serviced once by Omega in Switzerland for the 5 year maintenance they recommended. Strange it wasn't identified at that time but now it has been

Re: Omega watch service

Some 10 years back when watches were being overproduced official retailers were shifting their stock to gray dealers so in order for them to hide the provenance of the watches that were sold heavily discounted (even Costco stocked Omega!) official dealers were keeping the paperwork of the watches and most gray dealers were removing the serial numbers to escape the possibility that the watches were traced back to the original retailers who sold them for big discount

If the watch was bought brand new at a brick and mortar store at that period with the serial removed for me means a gray market watch, not a stolen one

But this habit changed and today gray market watches come with serials intact

If your watch doesn't have a serial number Omega will service it but they will make swapping of the case mandatory with a new service case carrying serial number

Policy changed after they found out about gray market dealings, serial numbers on the case were introduced in the late 1990s-mid 2000 depending on model anyway

Re: Omega watch service

Anyway, again, why don’t you just remove the strap, if that is what requires repair?

Occurred to me as well. I had serviced twice at Omega in the first 10 years of ownership. Once for routine maintenance, the other for a scratched sapphire crystal replacement.

Would be some trick to have switched it off my hand or house and would surprise me if this happened at Omega - unless they simply never checked the serial number previously

Or it happened in the mail?

Odd nevertheless
