Re: New U2 album, Songs of Innocence...

As far as Apple abusing it's power goes, I'd rather be 'given' a free album than have my privacy hacked.... OK, sooo

I don't get the catch here.

- Apple, new promo (new phone, watch, shit people don't need) - tick
- U2, gets what exactly?

Is the download conditional in anyway?

As far as a privacy breach is concerned, it would have been nicer to have an option to download the album for free, rather than have to delete the bloody thing if you didn't want it.
If U2 think they have half a billion fans, they are kidding themselves.

jesus christ, people moaning they have been given something for free

don't want it?? hit that delete key

is it any different from getting a spam email or ad pop up, no, except quite a few people in the world actually want it.

Re: New U2 album, Songs of Innocence...

I find the album OK, not their best, but I enjoy listening it on the morning commute. As for the Apple stunt ... it's free, don't like it, delete it.

I think what people are moaning about is not that they've been given something for free, it's they way it was given to them that's got peoples backs up - there was no opt in, it just appeared without warning in their account.

If Apple had said anybody who wants the album can download it for free then there wouldn't have been the backlash, but they didn't. They simply put it into every itunes user's account regardless - for some hipsters it could be very embarrassing having a U2 album in their itunes purchased section.

As far as I'm concerned I do take issue with the way Apple did this, but it's not really a big problem and I will give the album a spin tomorrow morning.

I'm not complaining that it's free, or how much I love or hate U2 or Apple.

Big Band, Big company..... giving shit away because they are nice guys????
I don't think so.

It just doesn't add up.

I get the promo side of things from Apple, but where exactly do U2 win in this scenario?
Did Apple at least pay them for the album?
[warning: tin foil hat comment approaching]
Is there secret software in the U2 download songs?

I don't know, maybe I'm a cynic, but big business always wins in the end one way or another, and it's generally at our expense.

Re: New U2 album, Songs of Innocence...

Before this Apple/U2 thing became widely known, I was listening to BBC radio (but not really listening wholly to the blabber), and they were discussing the new U2 album ...... about how long it was in the making; how it's release had been postponed (I think), and a few other gems of negative speculation on how it might not be their finest work and how pre-sale interest wasn't high.

Then low and behold U2 are in bed with Apple, promoting their new gadgets and Apple are pushing U2's album.

Wish I had been better listening, and had heard properly, now ....... bloody work.
