Crazy kitchen design at 100% Design Festival show

Obviously this guy has never worked in a kitchen anywhere!

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-29376759

Yeah, I'll keep an eye out for it all right - so I can avoid it like the plague.

Belgian designer Xavier Bonte set himself the challenge of building a household object that would be both a work of art, and a useful, compact device for urban living.
100% fail on both counts then.

Re: Crazy kitchen design at 100% Design Festival show

Oops guess I'd better change the title.

Frankly, I think the guy should be banned from calling himself a designer. What an ugly monstrosity he came up with. Far too big, little work space, little storage. Wouldn't have it in my kitchen - even if I could fit it in!

Re: Crazy kitchen design

Coming to a Swiss appartment near you soon.

As per Piers' comments last night (BBC2 100k homes) the kitchen started off in the centre before being pushed to the sides - then into a separate room. It is now being incorporated back into the heart of the home.

A single multi purpose island could work in some installations.

Re: Crazy kitchen design

Yes, that seems to be the preferred nowadays. I know the people who bought the house we were renting knocked down the dividing wall between the kitchen and the living area to make it all one big room. Can't say I'm a fan myself, I prefer to have the kitchen separate or maybe something like a big kitchen/dining room in one but I don't really like living/dining/kitchen altogether.

About " knocked down the dividing wall between the kitchen and the living area" of course this means you no longer have this wall as a place to put your cupboards. This can severely limit your kitchen storage capacity!

Nothing worse than trying to read with a fridge throbbing away in the same room.

... actually, no: having to see dirty dishes when you look up from your book - that's worse!

This one only had a breakfast bar attached to it so not much storage space lost. Mind you I used to keep a lot of stuff underneath it that I didn't have room for in the cupboards. My bread machine, the small kiddy seat from IKEA that I use as a step to reach those parts of the cupboards I'm not tall enough to get at without it, etc.

Exactly, that's what a kitchen door is for, to hide the washing up!

Re: Crazy kitchen design

aww I think it's cute! Not something I would personally buy, but probably has its market.

And yes, the separate kitchen or open-plan kitchen/living room debate will usually get as heated as asking how often you change your bed-sheets. Horses for courses.

Well, I guess he's big enough for the pots and pans to hide behind.

Running water and husband scrubbing the dishes make an excellent background for reading.

But what about all the dirty stuff sitting on the worksurface waiting for you to load into it, which won't happen until you unload the clean stuff first?

It takes up a helluva lot of space for a sink, hob, and two drawers. Not what I'd call "compact"...
