****The Photography Discussion Thread****

I notice there have been some random specific photography threads posted, but no big one thread where people can just discuss photography in general (equipment, camera settings, tips etc) like we have with other subjects on the forum. The post pictures thread doesn't really count as it's mainly photos, so I thought I'd create a general thread where people can discuss whatever they want to about the subject.

For the last 2 years I have had a Nikon D7000 which has served me incredibly well, it was (and still is) a great, great camera that really allowed me to practise and learn a few useful things. Anyway, as a present to myself for making some positive changes in lifestyle of late, I just went out today and bought a Nikon D750 with 24-120mm lens. As per usual with almost of my major electronics purchases, I bought it from Media Markt, as they happily (gawd love 'em) price matched the cheapest (in stock) Toppreise price, which happened to be Microspot. Amusingly, the CH price is also a full 30% cheaper than the UK price (I checked using the UK Toppreise equivalent) which makes the investment a little more palatable.

For anyone who's interested, here's a great write-up of the D750 (wildlife and landscape focussed) which highlights strengths and weaknesses and shows what it's capable of https://photographylife.com/nikon-d7...pe-photography

I wanted to go full frame and get something a bit more meaty as I ran into low-light limitations with the D7000, and the autofocus system wasn't the quickest or sharpest. The D750 is a clear improvement both in terms of low light handling, with much cleaner images at higher ISO's, and a much better (although narrower coverage) AF system that seems to be bang on the money 99% of the time. It also has some cool features like WiFi, meaning you can use your smartphone as a remote (though with very limited options, basically just focussing, shutter release, and playback) which will come in very handy for group photos etc.

Limitations of the camera seem to be a less than generous buffer size that gives around 12 RAW images in a single burst with a 30MB/s write speed SD, which doesn't really bother me as I'm not really a sports snapper, although I have ordered 2x new SD cards with 80MB/s write speeds which should give me a few more frames if I need it. Also, it has a max 1/4000s shutter speed... but I also don't see this as a problem as there are only very specific scenarios where this would be important (basically quite extreme light or motion conditions).

The 24-120 "kit lens" (if it can be called that, as it's a decent lens in its own right) has an aperture through the range of f4, and from the limited test photos I did seems to be pretty quick and sharp, all things considered. Looking forward to taking it out for a proper test run, though I read the bokkeh is a bit unpleasant. However, as a general purpose lens with good reach, I think it will do the job perfectly to start with.

What I also like is that I can just bang my DX 35mm 1.8g on there and it automatically detects and adjusts the sensor crop to DX format. Of course this only gives me around 11MP to play with, but does mean I can still get some fun out of my prime before I eventually get around to stumping up for the FX versions.

Now I need to decide which flash I want to get... the Yongnuo's get very good reviews and are miles cheaper than the Nikon equivalents so I may grab one of those to test.

I'll try and post some photos from the D750 in the photos thread as soon as I'm able.

So... anyone else bought, received, or are looking at some new kit in 2015? All discussion of photography, equipment or practical applicaitons, welcome.

Sounds fun! I am a photographer and always adding bits but also added a new Epson 3880 printer. I had one before but had to sell it due to moving.

Look forward to seeing the photos from your new camera. I need a 2nd Canon 5dm3 and currently looking for the best price. Wish it was easier to have it shipped from the USA

The Mk III is $2400 in the USA, and 2650CHF here on Toppreise.ch http://www.toppreise.ch/prod_268317.html

That is only around 10% more expensive in Switzerland, with a longer 3 year warranty... not to mention import taxes would then make the USA price more than the CH one.

Media Markt will pricematch that Toppreise.ch online price, so if I were you I would just save the hassle and buy over here, it's cheaper overall.

Yes, Digifuchs has a shop very close to where I live at Bahnhof Enge.

Toppreise has largely got rid of the rogue shops in the last couple of years, so if you stick to the well known ones you are fine.

Read the first post more thoroughly, that's where I bought mine and they have them all through Switzerland.

Re: ****The Photography Discussion Thread****

I just ordered the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D prime... costs 99chf new at Digitec and is meant to be very sharp and fast with no distortion. Bargain!

Amazon reviews here... though the UK price is double that of CH... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-NIKKOR.../dp/B00005LEN4

We really do seem to live in the land of awesome prices for photography equipment.

Re: ****The Photography Discussion Thread****

Saw your posted results with the new addition, very good portrait shot.

Still have a Nikon D200 from launch day and it just keeps going and the results still very good with a 24:70 AFS. Very high actuation count with weddings and portrait sessions etc.
Kind of tempting fate waiting longingly for this....

I just read this on dpreview... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-df

Quote:
The Df is built around the 16MP full frame sensor from the company's flagship D4 with the processor and AF system borrowed from the comparatively affordable D610.
Also only has a single SD slot... I really don't see the appeal of this one personally, especially given the price.

EDIT - This review seems to sum up my initial thoughts ... http://www.dslrbodies.com/cameras/cu...df-review.html

I've got the equivalent Canon 50mm 1.8, the CANON EF 50 mm f/1.8 II.

It also cost about the same as the Nikon and also has awesome performance.
It's also incredible lightweight.

The only problem with it is that you now cannot face your bog standard zoom lenses and feel you need to upgrade these too for comparable performance.

Hah yeah, the first time I stuck a prime on my old D7000 and compared it to the kit lens I was like "Oh. My God.". Couldn't believe the increase in sharpness and the kind of shots you could get in low light indoors and outdoors.

It's just a shame that Nikon don't seem to do a "cheap" equivalent 35mm lens for FX cameras as they do for DX format... the only Nikon AF-S 1.8G I can find is around 550chf!

Well the best walk around lens for FX is 24-70mm F2.8 G . It covers generally used focal length and is really a awesome lens . Can be used for Portraits , Group Photographs and Landscape as well . The Bokeh is amazing . For Portraits , I prefer 85mm F 1.4 which is also known as King of Bokeh .

Ok, I'll get this straight right now. I'm not singling you out, but your comment there is really the reason where I lost the passion for photography.

Too many people talk about kit rather than actual photography. It really doesn't matter whether you have a 1.2 or a 1.4 lens - nobody is going to notice except for you.

Stop with the pixel peeping and concentrate on getting stunning images. Apart from certain specialist areas you don't need several thousand worth of gear and quite frankly you can get stunning images from a phone camera.

I've said enough, and will now crawl back under my rock.

Well, the Nikon 1.4 has different bokeh to the Canon 1.2, I think the bokeh is more pleasing from the Canon. How is this pixel peeping or being stuck on kit? I'm not a kit talker type.

In my line of work I DO need several thousands of $ in equipment, as I need professional kit and back ups.

You should be more friendly if you get out from under that rock again
