Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

I haven't lived in England for the last 17-18 years, but I am feeling like it is time to go back. I have visited at least once every year, but of course there is a difference between living there and visiting. Just curious as to what other people think about where they would live and where they wouldn't want to live.

Thank you!

Re: Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

It depends. Will you work, do you have a job, and how rich are you?

If your job is in London, a cottage in Scotland is probably not a realistic option. If you're on a small retirement income, a big house in Sussex probably isn't on the cards.

Agreed - definitely need more info.

Personally I would go to Southampton but that is based purely on my own experience living there. Granted, I was a student at the time so my lifestyle now would be completely different, but I believe there is at least some sort of job market there, it's close to my home (the Isle of Wight) and is lively, great shopping, good train connection to London, has an airport etc.

I think anyone answering this question without knowing about your circumstances will be giving you a biased opinion based purely on their experience and own situation.

So I think you might need to say why you want to move back? What are you missing here that you think the UK might offer you?

What are your plans for the next 5 years? Where did you live before in England? Seaside town? Urban city? Country side?

You have kids? (I saw it on your profile) What do they like? How will this affect them?

Let me remind you that Scotland is not in England.

Re: Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

Same as all the above- depends on so many things.

If I/we moved back, it would be to the East Midlands- lovely countryside and stone villages and towns- but so close to vibrant and multicultural Leicester- fast and very regular trains to London St Pancras (1 hour, every half hour till late), excellent access to M1/A1/M11, Luton and Stansted for EasyJet to all of Europe. And of course very reasonable prices for rents and house/flat purchase. Market Harborough is a favourite.

Having lived in London for over 30 years I would have been biased, however I have spent a couple of weekends in Worcestershire, rather like 'To the Manor Born' GF looks & sounds like Penelope Keith .

Well, Malvern has a lot to recommend it. Apart from the hills, it's a local social hub and has easy access to most parts of England and Wales.

I would move back to Cornwall without hesitation, and would avoid any large urban areas like the plague.

Re: Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

I have 3 kids, eldest moved back to England for University this year, the middle one would be going into english 6th Form at the start of the next school year (or if we stay will go into 11th grade), the youngest would be in primary school for another couple of years. I haven't worked since my eldest was borm, and then we left England in 1998 and have lived abroad ever since. Youngest two kids seem in favour of living in England for the first time. I would like to go back to work, although I'm not looking for any sort of high powered career! Husband may stay here temporarily until he finds a job back in the UK and commute weekends (he really likes Switzerland). I haven't put where I am from, as I just wanted ideas of where might be nice to live, and where people would say to avoid!
Thanks for all the ideas so far, a couple of them I have thought about, the more southern options not so much!

personally, i'd live just off soho square in london. it is close to all the restaurants, shops, nightlife you ever want while still being able to retreat into your own quiet spot when you need to.

Depends what you want…. Ambleside in the Lake district is gorgeous! Not many job opportunities though!

Re: Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

If you have questions about East Leicestershire and schools, fire away, on Forum or by pm. As said Market Harborough has fast trains to London in 1 hr- which is brilliant- and good schools too. Robert Smythe 6th Form is excellent.

One of our daughers lives in our flat there, and she just loves the town and surrounding areas, and so easy for her work traveling all over due to great train and road connections. Great shops, both large and small + boutiques, weekly farmers' market, pubs both traditional and modern, same for restauransts of every kind, and great village pubs. Great butchers and fishmongers, lots of individual cafés and bars, as well as Starbucks, Costa and Nero. Leicester nearby is so bustling, huge market, fabulous shopping centre with huge John Lewis, Carluccios, Real Burger Co, sushi, and of course great Indian restaurants, cafés of every kind. Love it and would be happy to move back there if ever we do go back. And people in Leicestershire never sound or behave like Penelope Keith either, win win.

And it is more or less in the centre of England- you are in Norfolk, for Blakeney or Wells, but also the Peake District and the Cotswolds- all within just over 1 hour, and of course Cambridge and Nottingham- with beautiful Rutland and Rutland Water + Stamford even nearer.

As much as I love Devon and Cornwall, or the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales- the prices there are just too high- and all 3 too far from London and larger airports for 'cheap' travel to Europe.

Re: Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

So much depends on personal tastes. If someone was coming here, I'd recommend Hirzel - I think it's a wonderful, beautiful place, with a great village life with both locals and lots of english speaking families, but I know you didn't like it, and moved away.
In the UK, for my tastes, I would want somewhere similar.
Small enough to be known and integrate, large enough for things to be going on.
Small enough to be surrounded by nature, close enough to get easily the city when needed.
I find much more meaningful life in a small place knowing the community, than in a big place with all the facilites knowing nobody.

My choices: North Wales, Hampshire, Dorset.

I'd go to Yorkshire without hesitation.
I'm not a city person so would live in one of the smaller towns ( not right out in the sticks).

Warwickshire for me. Leamington Spa or Stratford upon Avon. Good links from Leam to Brum or London and an airport nearby too.

Re: Thinking about moving to England - where would you live (or not live!) and why??

Hmmm - I often ponder the same thing - we've been overseas for 20 years now (our son lives in the US and daughter lives on the Isle of Wight). We still have our little house in a commuter village in south west Essex which we've rented out for all these years (originally it was supposed to be an expat posting for 12-18 months and we still haven't gone home lol!).

The Guardian newspaper runs a series on 'Let's Move To......' which has been ongoing for a few years now, covers most if not all of the regions of the UK and is worth taking a look at:

http://www.theguardian.com/money/series/letsmoveto (350 results!!!)

If money were no object I'd love to live in the Cotswolds as it is so easy to get to Oxford and London for the 'big city' cultural fix. However on trips back to the UK in the last 3 or 4 years I've had short stays on the coast in north Norfolk, a stable conversion near Dartmouth, Devon and a week in a flat (originally a huge house) in Buxton, Derbyshire (a lovely Spa town, large well kept houses - I saw no litter or graffiti, very inexpensive and beautiful parks and countryside...it is the Peak District of course.

I greatly enjoyed exploring the local areas and obviously the further you are from London commuters and 'weekenders' with second homes the more bang for your buck with property prices. If you need to be near London for work (especially if just for a couple of days a week) then Thaxted in Essex is an ancient market town and very nice indeed.

My late parents-in-law lived in Wilmslow, Cheshire (although my spouse and his siblings grew up in Bristol) and it is also an attractive area, apparently the 'stockbroker' belt of the Manchester area....quite a few TV celebs based in Manchester (Granada studios) and football players live around there.
