10 killed filming reality survival programme

What a surprise.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-31809231

Why does it always take people dying for the powers that be to realise that these programmes are not the ones to make. It happened on the Late, Late Breakfast Show and has happened on others.

Wake up people! Not only are these the most boring programmes you can imagine - they kill people!

Condolences to their families and friends for their most untimely deaths.

Re: 3 killed filming reality survival programme

Maybe a thread title amendment - it was actually 10 people killed ..... but the focus seems to be more on three sports 'stars', who may have been 'known'.

Re: 3 killed filming reality survival programme

Indeed, 8 French participants were killed, plus the 2 Argentinian helicopter pilots.

Causes of the accident seem pretty mysterious, as the sky was clear and visibility good.

Quite right and title changed. Unfortunately, it's usually only when "names" die that any action is taken.

Meaning what exactly? What action should be taken?

2 helicopters operating in close proximity crashed into each other - the exact circumstances are yet not published.

Meaning it takes people dying to get these programmes cancelled. These programmes are dangerous.

Is the format dangerous? Or the way it is filmed?

In other words are you more or less outraged by "10 people die in helicopter crash while filming reality tv" than "10 people die in a helicopter crash"? If so, why?

Re: 10 killed filming reality survival programme

If it's anything like "I'm a Celebrity..." then they'll have an action sequence at the beginning of the series that shows the helicopters swooping close to each other. I guess in this case they just got a little too close.

Don't know anything about this show or the participants it attracts however I think if this were to happen on "I'm a Celebrity" there is a small part of me that would have to chuckle.

Re: 10 killed filming reality survival programme

Very sad and tragic accident. However its inevitable that something was going to happen at sometime on one of these sorts of programmes, but calling for them to be banned is ridiculous. The reality format is here to stay, if somebody choked to death eating Kangaroo balls in I'm a Celebrity, I am sure that would also cause a huge debate, but these programmes, like life have an inherent risk and we cant just stop them because something might happen. I am sure a few stunt people and crew die every year making films, but we don't stop films being made.

They sign disclaimers and know the risks, even if they believe something might never happen there is always a small risk. Same thing if you choose to do a bungee jump or go scuba diving, you sign a disclaimer because there are risks, and no matter how small that probability is, its still a probability!

Re: 10 killed filming reality survival programme

Looks like the pilots simply weren't aware of each other's position in the air. Just showed a video of it on the Beeb news. One slightly below and behind the other and they both touched. Should have had good visibility though as they were those bubble canopy type coptors so plenty of clear space to look through; the one below should have been able to see the other at least.

I'm outraged because this sort of thing has happened before in similar TV programmes yet the companies still keep making them and putting peoples' lives in danger - all for our entertainment.

So is making the TV programme the problem OR flying in helicopters? (Being as you have failed to answer a simple question).

In your mind, as soon as somone is killed or perhaps seriously injured engaged in something that is entertainment, that entertainment should be banned.

So where do you stand on Formula One? (Or maybe just Formula that happens in the rain and dusk?)
What about football? Do you know how many players have collapsed and died in the last decade?
Any sort of winter sport?

I think we should ban fashion - because the models are very thin, which encourages anorexia/bulimia - of which many people die each year.

F1 drivers and winter/summer sports competitors are trained professionals, not "celebrities" brought in to up the TV ratings. I'm sure the fact that they signed declaimers will be a great comfort to their friends and families.

And yes, I agree with you that fashion should also be banned; stupid, unrealistic expectations, exploitation of the models and totally unnecessary. Beauty contests can also be added to the banned list.

MsWorWoo, yes that too. I can't imagine why anyone wants to watch them in the first place.

I can't imagine why anyone wants to go skiing, or smoke a cigarette, or eat Ethiopian food, but I wouldn't want to see any of those activities banned.

What a strange idea!

I think you're missing the point. It doesn't get much press coverage becasue they were foreign. If there'd been a brit aboard then the headline would have read "Briton killed in tragic accident" "(and some foreigners)".

Re: 10 killed filming reality survival programme

It is a sad event but accidents will continue to happen and people will continue to take risks. That is just human nature.

I'm sure that most of these people have faced greater risks in their lives. Banning all similar programmes on Health & Safety grounds would be an over reaction. Banning them because they are rubbish may be a different thing
