Is it a car? Is it a plane?

This isn't exactly news (it's been in development for more than 25 years, and it had its maiden test flight a few months ago), but how awesome is this vehicle?!

I want one! (I just need to scrape together around CHF 250,000.)

Is that like a car that doesn't like to hear other vehicles talk about their late nights out together?

Re: Is it a car? Is it a plane?

unfortunately, the concept didn't work 60 years ago and never will.

Ideally, it should be based on a helicopter. That would allow you to just take off if traffic is too busy.

You think the idea won't fly? But it does, as shown in the video! Sure, you can't take off from the highway when you get stuck in a traffic jam, but nor would you be permitted to, even in a helicopter.

Apparently the company sees potential in countries with poor road infrastructure. It looks like the vehicle needs a grass runway (unless they're just saying that it will also perform on grass), perhaps to save the tyres which then have to perform on asphalt roads.

Pah.... flying cars, they've been predicting them ever since I was a kid It's not the technology that's the issue but the regulatory authorities.

Re: Is it a car? Is it a plane?

I think the idea of a flying car holds great promise. Just think about it. Current transportation (apart from air traffic) is for all intents constrained to a two dimensional plane. Expanding to three dimensions will allow hitherto unprecedented scalability for commuter traffic.

Having said that, this particular implementation will not work I think because of two fundamental flaws:

1. Lack of automation. I believe that flying cars will only work once vehicles become fully autonomous with some form of swarm intelligence and globally coordinated traffic control. Just think about it: would you want the Aargau pinheads to switch from their agri-yob subaru to a vehicle that requires spatial awareness in all 3 dimensions to operate safely? Exactly. So this thing needs to be able to function completely hands off.
2. Lack of VTOL capability. The main reason why flying cars make sense is to increase commuter capacity of cities. What bloody use is a thing that requires 300 meters of empty road to land? A flying car needs to be fully VTOL capable such that you can hover to a parking spot and simply lower the vehicle on to the ground.
