Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

If you go to your booking online they will most likely have an Advanced Passage Information thing for you to click on and fill out. I think it's because with EJ they often allocate seating and give you the boarding pass when you buy the ticket but other airlines you can't do that 'til 24 hours before, and you might change your mind.
Makes life easier for when I want to buy a ticket and don't have the details on me.
Actually, I think the EasyJet I booked for a forntnight hence in November didn't because I changed a passport and so only inputted the data last month.

Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

Depends on the rules of the country you are flying to/from. I tend to fly to the UK or USA so it's a must.

And I've never given passport details. 2 trips a year India-Switzerland. On a US passport, but no one would know that since they don't ask

Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

Within Europe it's only the UK and Ireland plus Russia that require API (also Spain if starting from outside Schengen). If Easyjet are requiring it for other destinations that's down to them.

Flew to Budapest recently and never had to show or detail anything relating to identity at any stage. All quite normal.

Strange as India is on the API list. Maybe a recent change?

Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

Been coming back and forth since early 2012. Emirates or Qatar from Ahmedabad-Zurich. Nothing's ever changed.

It only sometimes gets interesting when they ask for my Swiss visa at check-in And the 10-year Indian visa sometimes gets them in Zurich.

Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

When I book to the UK easy jet always ask for API details, I booked to Greece and they didn't ask. So I assume that within schengen it is not necessary. If the country you are going to doesn't require API then the airline won't ask for it.

Interestingly, some hotels also don't ask for your passport on check-in anymore if you pay by credit card as one hotelier told me, all details are on that, it's your ID and proof of ability to pay.

I think hotels only do it in case it is a legal obligation. I can remember that this is the case in Italy.

Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

Basically it is the decision of the airline for countries that do not demand the info.

The issue is that if you arrive in a country and are refused entry because of a passport issue then the rule is the airline is responsible for you. If the country you flew from also will not accept you because of a passport issue then it gets expensive for the airline.
Of course they will try to get their money back from you......

It's not just airlines; I had to provide API for our Eurotunnel booking at Easter.

Re: giving passport details for flights other than easyjet

Hotels in some countries require your ID and will register your stay with the local cops - certainly this is the case in Italy. The cops can then catch people they've been looking for, or so you expect.

The API is for Ape Island and Ireland as posted. Within Schengen, you'll be lucky to be asked for ID. I flew to Luxembourg last week and only once was I asked for ID - I showed my Swiss driver's licence when leaving Malpensa.....
