Re: Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in UK Uni locations.....?

During my college years, I've been fortunate to study abroad. When it comes to outside factors influencing drinking, I found that accessibility of alcohol and University alcohol policies played a big role.
Compared to other countries, the UK makes it very easy for kids to purchase alcohol and professors tend to turn a blind eye on this problem. Some colleges are starting to enforce drinking prevention and interventions. It remains to be seen how effective they are.
Based on my personal experiences, the countries with the biggest drinking cultures are UK, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Rep, France, Australia, US and Switzerland. Interestingly, from what I observed, the Scandinavians, Spanish, Portuguese and Italians drink regularly but in moderation.
Edinburgh is one of the most popular student destinations. I'm sure he'll have lots of fun and enjoy his final year(s) of ‘freedom’ before entering the working world.

Now remind me, Swiss do not pay fees at UK unis, is that right? Must get our grandchildren registered as Swiss soon.

It's all a bit complicated and only really applies to undergraduate degrees. But a Swiss or EU person wanting to study an undergraduate degree in Scotland will not pay any tuition fees but an English person wanting to study at a Scottish university will.

This depends largely on residence rather than nationality but has an element of both.
Two categories of people pay tuition fees at Scottish universities:

1. non-EU
2. Britons who haven't been resident in Scotland for the past three years,

I know dual nationality Britons with Swiss/EU passports who for the purpose of their application state their non-British nationality.

Yes it's very normal now in town centres, and has been for too long.

The UK has the worst binge drinking culture in the world imo, and I would say it is now pretty much endemic to society and youth culture there.

In comparison CH is very tame and largely untainted by the same issues, and I personally think that's a very good thing, and the kind of environment I want my future kids to grow up in.
Why do we want our kids to behave in ways that we mock about the Eidgenossen?

Well that just isn't true.

Swiss don't pay tuition fees in Scotland and they are non EU

If you're returning to Scotland and lived in the EU or Switzerland you can also get funding.

Re: Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in UK Uni locations.....?

Only lived in Canada (Toronto) for a few months and found they weren't as heavy drinkers as Germans and British. Would be interesting to hear from people who don't live in large cities in Canada.. Could imagine that alcohol consumption is higher in rural areas.

Drinking and partying are parts of a rite of passage into adulthood for most young people irrespective of their domicile.. (a bit different in Asia maybe)

Could be wrong, but I feel like kids are drinking more now than they used to when I was in high school and college.
If you're interested, this paper looks at drinking ages and perceptions of when drinking is deemed appropriate from a cross cultural viewpoint: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK37620/

As far as I'm aware Switzerland has an agreement with EU & EEA. That means Swiss nationals enjoy same rights as EU & EEA when they apply to study in the UK (including EU tuition fees)

My nieces and nephews are almost teatotelers compared to my school years, so I think it also depends on when you attended.

Do kids even do keg parties anymore? Or bars with "quarter taps" night? Might be a Midwest thing. My fav was 1$ Long Island ice tea night. Holy crap we partied!

"Extasy" meant something different then though.
