Bad Translations

There are some funny and SOME perplexing translations. If you feel like it, publish them here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought a pair of jeans (Mens, blue, label is Vogue) and the label has this
message, (In upper case!)

EVER SINCE THE ENDING OF THE EPOCH
IN WHICH THE GRANDEE TOILETTE
PREVAILED THE CONVENIENTS SUCCINCT
AND FUNCTIONAL MODEM FASHION TIDES
HAVE CHANGED THE VISAGE OF
THE MEN'S APPAREL AND THEIR LIFE

Maybe it means something when translated back into Chinese?

[Yes it says MODEM, not a mistake by me]

I have put it through Google, to Chinese and back to English, some words changed, but Grandee, Toilette, Convenients and Modem did not translate.

But the meaning remains baffling.

自从时代的结束
其中GRANDEE TOILETTE
普遍存在的CONVENIENTS简洁
和功能MODEM时尚潮汐
已经改变了面貌
男人的服装他们的生活

Re: Bad Translations

Good thinking!

In fact "fashion tides" does sound like Chinese, as "tide" and "trend" are translated into similar Chinese words, so I guess when people translate their Chinese thinking into English (likely with the help of GoogleTranslate, or any other e-translator that is currently allowed within the Great Fire Wall...), "fashion trend" can become "fashion tide"

Re: Bad Translations

When I first arrived in Switzerland, I accompanied someone to a doctor's appointment, to see if my weak German would help his. He had severe bronchitis, perhaps pneumonia, and was struggling to breathe.
As it turned out, the doctor could speak much better English than either of us German, but he had evidently learnt it via French or similar. As he positioned his stethoscope he said, very solemnly: "I beg you to respire profoundly." Unfortunately, my friend was unable to suppress his amusement, and had it not been for some very quick intervention from the excellent doctor, my friend might quite literally have died laughing.

Re: Bad Translations

Le Lac newspaper (www.lelac.ch) this month has a whole load of bad/funny ones in its English Corner section. Here are just a few:

Bucharest hotel lobby: The lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable.

Athens hotel: Visitors are expected to complain at the office between the hours of 9 and 11 am daily.

On a Swiss restaurant menu: Our wines leave nothing to hope for.

Bangkok dry cleaners: Drop your trousers here for best results.

Swedish furrier's window: Fur coats made for ladies from their own skin.

Norwegian cocktail lounge: Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar.

And my favourite I think - a detour sign in Japan: Stop! Drive Sideways.

Re: Bad Translations

You need to be a French speaker to get this one, and I may have posted it before, but basically the original German text says that the Swiss Path at a particular point between Sisikon and Brunnen may be diverted after heavy rainfall for safety reasons.

The French translation tells us that the way into Switzerland has been diverted for safety reasons.
