Snow tyres in the UK / %?

Any idea- what is the percentage, you think, of drivers in the North of England, and Scotland and mountainous areas like North Yorkshire and the high Peaks- that are equipped with snowtyres?

Snow tyres in the UK? Common sense more likely. 1cm of snow and a light wind brings UK to a stand stop!!

Very low I would say. Winter tyres are not common at all in the UK and the only person I know who had winter tyres is the local taxi driver as he does frequent trips over the Pennines to Manchester airport.

Found a link from RAC

A recent study for Manheim Auctions has revealed that the vast majority of motorists in the UK do not plan to buy specialist tyres for this year's winter period.
Despite the predictions of another winter of chaos on the roads and disruptions caused by snow last year, 95.5% of the 3,000 motorists quizzed by One Poll said they do not plan to use winter tyres this year.




So pretty low.

None of our friends in Scotland have them. Funny though, if I compare the roads to where I live here, I´d definitely recommend winter tyres though.

I suspect the percentage of Brits that drive to ski resorts that have winter tyres won't be higher, probably lower. They will however have chains.

The Brits in the UK have never experienced the difference & tyre dealers won't have a clue what your talking about. As speed ratings are often lower than the maximum speed for the car it's possible that UK insurers would try to get out of paying a claim saying incorrect tyres were fitted.

many won't have chains, as their low profile tyres make that impossible. Planning a safe car park for my lot in Sion- and if necessary we will be the 'shuttle' up to Thyon 2000 with our 4x4 and snow tyres.

I have them on my uk cars, have done for three years. As does the lovely missus

The difference they make is amazing. This year i have a new car so have bought a new set as i would not be without them.

The problem here in the UK is they are very expensive via usual fast fit retailers (who see them as a profit opportunity), stocks sell out quickly, and you need somewhere to store them in summer... Plus either fund spare wheels or the cost of changes each winter/spring. Your average brit won't see the need because they've never experienced the difference.

And the problem with winter tyres is that they are of little use if you are in a 25km tailback of cars without them!

Back in 1983 when living in the UK and planning a trip to Switzerland in winter, I asked a tyre distributor about winter tyres.

They advised that the market was only about 500 tyres a year sold mainly to hill farmers in t' north. Today you can see ads in the daily papers for them. I bought chains instead and used them do about 5kms in the mountains...

Chains are really worth buying when driving in heavy snow regions, they aren't much help in slush and ice, when Winter tyres are very useful.

In the olden days what were the UK "Town & country tyres" made of, were they simply summer tyres with a chunky tread patten?

As we all know, Winter tyres are compulsory in Winter months in Austria and parts of Germany (Tom, is norther Italy compulsory?) and also required when driving in poor conditions here.

I don't know of any winter tyre rated at less than 70 mph. Britain is one place where it's really hard to exceed the national speed limit (due to lack of opportunity, if nothing else). Insurance companies have no business quibbling over the safe maximum speed of a car if that speed is in excess of the legal national speed limit.
