Star Wars: watch it, yes but in which order?

I plan to introduce my younger son to Star Wars. We will have binge-watching sessions during the holidays. The question is now in which order should the saga be watched to appreciate it fully? There could be references in the 2nd trilogy (release date 1999-2005) which happen in the first trilogy (release 1977-1983).

Is it best viewed in the order of release dates (A new hope, empire strike backs, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom menace etc...) or following the episode numbering (The Phantom menace, Attack of the clones etc...) ?

Probably best to just stick to the first trilogy and pretend the 2nd trilogy never existed.

I wouldn't bother with the last three CGI efforts. They add nothing to the story.

So just watch the original three in order and then the new one.

Anyway, that's just an opinion.

There's a BBC Radio 4 programme called that:

"I've never seen Star Wars"

interesting mix. Pushing episode 6 towards the end keeps the "I'm your father" tension and surprise.

Yep, Machete Order is the best way to watch them.

Re: Star Wars: watch it, yes but in which order?

Episode III is the only one of the three worth a watch, as it contains some half-decent elements and is as close to a prequel to Episode IV as we can get. Episode I and II are awful and best avoided.

However I would not watch Episode III before IV, V and VI simply because I believe the first Star Wars experience should be the magic of the originals and 100% unsullied by the modern efforts.

In fact, I would probably make my kids watch IV, V and VI around three times to develop a good appreciation of them before I let them anywhere near the new ones.

Meh, I'm not a fan of the Machete order. Would rather watch the original trilogy 'despecialised' and then gradually work towards the others.

Re: Star Wars: watch it, yes but in which order?

If you are an adult you are most likely able to connect the pieces together in random order

However for children and somone who never watched it before, it is recommened to start in such order ...

Let's say you grew up watching the Star Wars trilogy, then had children sometime after 1999, when George Lucas started releasing the prequels.
When your kids are old enough, what order should they watch the films in? The order they were released — Star Wars (A New Hope) (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983), then The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005)? Or the order the events happened in the Star Wars universe: Phantom Menace (I), Attack of the Clones (II), Revenge of the Sith (III), New Hope (IV), Empire Strikes Back (V), and Return of the Jedi (VI)?
Rod Hilton, a computer programmer in Colorado, has given this a lot of thought, and he probably has the best solution. His (correct) instinct is to start with New Hope (IV), because if you start with Phantom Menace (I) you lose the essential shock of learning Luke's parentage in Empire Strikes Back. But he also wants to end on a high note — so, none of the prequels. Here's Hilton's "Machete Order," named after his blog, Absolutely No Machete Juggling:

Next time you want to introduce someone to Star Wars for the first time, watch the films with them in this order: IV, V, II, III, VI.
Notice something? Yeah, Episode I is gone. Episodes II and III aren't exactly Shakespeare, but standing next to the complete and utter trainwreck that is Episode I, they sure look like it. At least, III does anyway. Episode I is a failure on every possible level. The acting, writing, directing, and special effects are all atrocious, and the movie is just plain boring. Luckily, George Lucas has done everyone a favor by making the content of Episode I completely irrelevant to the rest of the series. [No Machete Juggling]

Read Hilton's admittedly "amazingly long blog post" for his longer rationale and alternative viewing orders. Luckily, when the final three movies of the series come out (Episodes VII, VIII, and IX), they will be last under both chronologies. Assuming, of course, that they're worth watching at all.

Re: Star Wars: watch it, yes but in which order?

I would watch the sequel in order of release date.

I don't think there is any movie to be avoided because only when you have seen the movie, you know if it was good or not.

No way. If you have a chance to allow someone to think that Episode I (and imo, II) never existed, then you take it.

Re: Star Wars: watch it, yes but in which order?

The so called machete order is best to preserve the story line, and story-theme for hardcore fans. It also holds the big surprise while giving some back story.

However for young people new to the story, it loses artistic flow from due to the jump back and forth from new to old--this can be hard for people who don't quite understand the history of the films with society. (original hype and success, prequel hype and criticism, filmmaking technology etc.)

Episode 1 is left out of this order because it doesn't offer a lot to the overall story, and it would break up the classic 3.

I think the new 3 are only good for some interesting backstory (especially on Fett family), so I would watch them all.

My favorite is the release order. Especially if your kids don't know the 'secret'.

And if they don't know the secret----video tape them watching it, there are some great youtube videos of people watching this for the first time.

Also bear in mind the age appropriateness.

4 is fairly mild.

5 darker.

6 in between.

1 is a Disney cartoon.

2 similar to 5.

3 darkest of them all.

For me yes. It creates a special experience and bond with my son. We've done it with Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Re: Star Wars: watch it, yes but in which order?

I never minded the prequels. I thought they were good fun, ok not a patch on the originals but very watchable. They certainly didn't tarnish the legacy of the original films as much as the Matrix sequels did.

Oh the poor thing! What did he do? In any case I think that classes as a 'cruel and unusual' punishment under the Geneva convention, surely?

Far better to sit and read the books together, especially the hobbit for a youngster, and then let him come to the films if and when he's ready for them. Too late now, of course
