Bananas - threatened with extinction

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-35131751

Will we eventually lose our favourite fruit?

A fate of a mono culture. We will get much more expensive other varieties, and maybe grown in a more sustainable way. So no more sweat potatoes.

Re: Bananas - threatened with extinction

Interesting, some many years ago I was in the Canary Islands and they were full of abandoned banana plantations.
I was told the reason was that the bananas did not meet European standards; whether that was true or not I have no idea.

I think it was more likely the irrigation water became too expensive. There was a fight between European growers and the US growers, with one side claiming that straight/curved bananas were not acceptable for Europeans. I think the French won the fight, and we no longer see Fyffe's bananas here. So maybe your Canary Island plantation belonged to Fyffe's ?

This is pretty old news, it's been around for years now. However it's unlikely all narnas will go extinct. We hope.

It's possible that as Sbrinz said they were Fyffes bananas. But they could have been another variety. they grow or used to grow a variety of small bananas on the Canaries, Madeira and the Azores. These do not meet the standard of the EU to be sold on the European market. (One thing I hate about the EU!)

So they can only be sold internally. The. Of course they are more expensive than the mass market Cavendish banana and there is little market for them.
