Please keep your bl&&y cold

Time to batten down the hatches, looks like Malta could quite possibly get snow for the FIFTH time in the last 250 years, at the moment it is a freeeeeeezing hot-water-bottle-thick-coat-hat-and-scarf 18° cold in the shade.

You laugh, but the houses here don´t have heating and are designed to get the heat out as fast as possible, great in summer but a bitch in winter.

Re: Please keep your bl&&y cold

Oh, I remember it well! Life in an unheated flat with single glazed windows, marble floors and no soft furnishings. Ice on the inside of the windows.

I borrowed a thick, traditional quilt from my boss. It was like lying in an iron lung, but it was better than hypothermia.

Eventually, it dawned on me that it would be cheaper to go to the ouzeri up the road every night for dinner and get my heating thrown in than to turn on the electric heater I'd scrounged.

And that's how I became a fat bastard.

My bedroom as a child in the 1960s was like that - one time I managed to scratch the glass pane with my fingernails, or at least with the ice I was trying to scratch off with them. I always thought that only diamond could scratch glass, but can testify that ice can in fact do so.

Brrr. Another log's just been put on the fire, to complement the underfloor and radiator heating...

Growing up in an ancient terraced house in the Bennington street in Blackburn in the sixties, I remember the single pane sash windows with complementary ice-flowers, diving under the bed sheets wriggling along the thin line between the scalding hot water bottle and the icy, stygian depths of the bed, then, just when you have found the sweet spot you need to go to the outhouse loo in the yard, it had a green wooden door and a one bar heater that never worked.
Brrr!

Northern Minnesota. As young boys, we would wait until a brother went in to do his business, then it was a full snowball ambush.
At night, with -30F, the wooden rafters and roofing nails in the house would contract so much that the roofing nails would pop out. Throughout the night, you would occasionally hear a nail let go with a distinctive ping. I have no idea how that roof is still standing today.

Re: Please keep your bl&&y cold

If it's any consolation, it's down to 0.7°c on our stairs and I'm having to build three fires a day to keep the rest of the house at an acceptable temperature (except the east wing, which we abandon during the winter because we're not made of money!).

Brrrrr!

You clearly need a few of these to shove against doorways...

Re: Please keep your bl&&y cold

Is there snow in Malta? Just read about Spain; exceptionally cold with snow.

Hope you're still not frozen
