Pubs have been in decline in the UK for a while now, for me the smoking band was the start, but now I think it's because people can't afford to go anymore, especially younger people. Going back to my old towns and seeing the pubs empty is kind of depressing.
I belong to the conspiracy theorists who put pubs' decline down to the pubcos. They deliberately fly all but the most profitable into the ground so they can show they're not profitable. Then they can get change of use permission and sell them for housing. Bastards the lot of 'em.

Re: So why do people go to the pub?

I tend only to go to real ale pubs that serve good pie with gravy and don't mind kids, walking boots and shameless dogs.

Oh yeah, within shambling home distance is good too.

If I'm allowed out without toddler supervison, I'm partial to ones that do cocktails too.

+1 on this for me.

If there is a garden for those rare occassions that the sun shines, then all the better.

Why should I go to the pub?
To have fun and enjoy yourself.

As you don't see the point probably neither applies so no point in going.

Re: So why do people go to the pub?

When I was in Flagstaff in Arizona I sent to a dinner (independent) and was quite enamored to see the the same sort of community feeling and events there that I used to feel in my local pub. Of course, most people were there for eating, but some where sitting at the bar, others were chatting to friends, there was a group that started they weekly dance practice. It was really homey.
I read a blog/part of book by the woman who wrote 'chinese-english dictionary for lovers' about how she started off in the UK, and would go to the pub for tea and to read, and how the locals would chat to her and how welcoming it was. (OK they thought she was a different chinese person who was there the year before but.... still.
So yeah.
I go to the Mousetrap to hang out and chat with other people, about everything and nothing, and as a result have made a good number of friends in Zurich.
So My answer would be to relax, socialise and meet people (not for pulling, getting hammered or talk faeces).
Cafes and restaurants have to turn tables around, with a pub you can stay as short a time or as long a time as you like. Public spaces are often more private, sitting down next to someone in a park can be very intrusive, standing next to someone at a bar is natural. Museums, galleries etc... whilst you can talk over an exhibit with the complete stranger next to you it is unlikely to lead to a lasting friendship and you will be moving too much, same with public transport, unless you commute exactly the same everyday (Coupling's 'the man with too many legs' episode comes to mind) you are again very unlikely to get friendship, and especially community, out of a conversation.
Beer is cheaper at home, Tinder is easier if you want to pull, and EF is a good place to spout rubbish for hours. Pubs are for relaxing, chatting and building friendships and even communities.

Or share them with...over a one-night stand, but since I'm not a drinker, I spend my time in Starbucks doing crossword puzzles.
YOU are the wife of the guy who found out, his wife spends too much money at Starbucks?

In the pub I used to go to we were a bunch of friends who had fun over some drinks together. Don't remember many getting really plastered on regular basis. It was a place I could go to by myself, meet friends, make new friends, be found by those mates who popped in and out of Switzerland, they'd always check the pub first. Yea, like blueangel said << It was the scene of make ups, break ups, parties, fights,>> too. I could stay all night or just pop in to say hi.
I miss having a place like that, actually.

I'm part of a group that raises money for charity by running have-a-go target sports at country fairs & galas.

We use a local pub as a central meeting place for organising events & discussing future plans, also for bringing new recruits into the group in a social atmosphere.

It's also a great place for networking with people that support what we're doing, many of whom offer us use of their land or other facilities. In fact, the landlord of the pub donates two barrels of beer from his micro-brewery to us for an annual event we run each May Bank Holiday in the Yorkshire Dales

Because I've got children.

And, because e-harmony matched me with Jim Bean and Jack Daniels.

because it's difficult to type nonsense while the wife is vacuuming.

Re: So why do people go to the pub?

You do mean a pub- a real English (UK) pub- with beams, brasses on the wall, a roaring fire in Ye Olde Chimney, locals at the bar ...like the one where we were last night. We went for dinner and catch-up with great friends, proper Ale for OH and best fish and chip in the area for him, and rack of lamb for me- oh and a proper pudding with custard! Basically- fab atmosphere and food- and great Ales (although I stick to wine). What's not to like

Beams, roaring fire and locals at the bar but no brasses.

Travelled back to the UK on Friday because my former local (which closed over 2yrs ago) reopened for one night only to host my mate's surprise 40th birthday party. Crawled in at 4am
