Google Earth........

Right i finally downloaded Google Earth (i know im very very late on this) and i have to say its crazy.

I tried various locations, including Richard Bransons island (blocked), and also the picture quality here in Switzerland was not that good.

Are there any plans for the future to up date the satallite images?

When were all these images taken? How up to date are they??

I briefly tried the flight navigator, and crashed loads.....i think it will take a while to get into that and remember all the buttons.

Any recommendations on where to look/go??

Also would appreciate any useful hint'n'tips....

Thanks
SC

Pics of my neighborhood seems to be pretty old (Kreis 5). My building is still a construction zone!

Re: Google Earth........

Try looking at Zug - since you live there. The photos of our area are more than 12 years out of date. Our place is still a swimming pool for the Villa next door

Re: Google Earth........

If you have downloaded version 4.3, it is still in beta version, which may explain why it crashes. You should be able to download the last stable version (4.2).

One of the interesting features about this beta version is that you are able to get the years of acquisition for some of the satellite images: look at the bottom center/right part of the window. For ex. doing this shows that the image for Zug dates from 1997.

The resolution varies widely based on where you are looking in the world. Many of these images are "high resolution" scenes that are about 15-30m resolution, but there are increasingly "very high resolution" scenes that are 0.6m resolution. If you want to see an example of the difference, type in "Kasulu, Tanzania" - on the right is a Quickbird (VHR) image, and on the left is a Landsat image (HR).

In time, most of the world should be covered by very high resolution images.

I hope this helped a little!

Re: Google Earth........

You should try finding Sultan Qaboos University hospital in Oman. The whole area is sort of blurred out for some reason. There wasn't a military base around there. I was attempting to describe to our girl where she was born and had a eureka moment - was only a moment too, just long enough for her to declare it boring and sandy.

Re: Google Earth........

I don't know the area, but a search for Sultan Qaboos University shows that this is a similar situation to my Kasulu example. Part of the university is covered by very high resolution images (where 1 pixel = 0.6m), while the other part is still covered by what seems to be a lower resolution Landsat image (1 pixel = 30m).
This is why it seems to be blurry - it is more of an image acquisition issue than a security one. As more images are taken by the more recent satellites and acquired for Google Earth, the resolution available to users will improve.

Re: Google Earth........

You do realize that a lot of the highres images are taken by airplanes, not satellites?

Re: Google Earth........

You're right - I just tend to have a satellite image bias because I use them in my research on refugee camps in Africa (no airplane coverage there!). I guess I should have specified that a combination of aerial photographs and satellite images is used for many urban areas, while most of the very high resolution coverage of smaller towns and more remote areas is done through satellites.

Re: Google Earth........

I'm using version 4.3 and it's been very stable. The image quality is also mostly good.

On some of the maps, when you zoom in, you can see at the bottom of the page, when the image was made. For instance, my village , Egerkingen, was recorded on the 4th May 2006.

Hi,

just for an alternative have you looked at the birds eye view on Live Maps. Here is an example looking at Basel....it is pretty impressive.

Sorry for the long link.

Re: Google Earth........

google maps now has, for some US locations at least a 'street level view', whereby they seem to have taken photos of streets whilst driving along them - have a look at addresses in New York City and surrounds, for example.... quite scary really...

Re: Google Earth........

According to the both Google and MS Maps, China has no road system except for highways. And very few locations worth mentioning.

Not very helpful when you're trying to organise a trip for work.

Re: Google Earth........

I just noticed that Google Earth has Zurich with photorealistic 3D Buildings. I don't know how long it has been available.

Another addition that I hadn't seen before is the 360 Cities panoramas (a bit like the street view images.)
