I can't work it out maybe an Apple head knows the answer..

I have an iMac.

I share internet wifi with another person.

I want to attach a wifi printer so I can print cable free from the iMac. I would like the printer to be private.

I have my own wifi router already in addition to the internet one.

I think I am asking is it possible to use two wifi connections with an iMac? one for the internet another for the printer? or is there some networking magic that also allows this. I am also thinking ahead I would like to add a sinology NAS (and this is also wifi?) so a bigger security problem.

Any ideas?

you need to make your wifi printer join the existing wifi network

Re: I can't work it out maybe an Apple head knows the answer..

You want your wifi router to be your main network, private to you and with your printer, iMac and anything else on it.

You then connect that to the other network (maybe wifi, or better through a cable if you're in the same location), so the other network is the internet as far as you are concerned.

Trouble is I don't think there's a standard way of doing this on any two routers, they're all different in what they support and how to configure them.

Maybe you can protect the printer with a password.

Out of the box, no it is not possible to have two WIFI connections simultaneously. However if you pick up a USB WIFI receiver it should work. That said, in my experience connecting over the WIFI to a printer was only so so. For the typical word document it works fine, but for documents with large images and so on it was taking longer than I was willing to wait so I reattached the ethernet cable!

I'm more excited than I probably should be but thank you for the advice of connecting the two routers with an ethernet cable. I kind of got stuck thinking there was some magical apple solution.

Now I have internet, a printer and a lifx bulb working off of my router.. two security cameras to go and the skies the limit
