Cats and girlfriends

I am a cat fanatic. Specifically Siamese and Oriental cats, and I am planning to get one of these...

http://www.balinesen.ch/5nanouk.jpg

My girlfriend thinks they are ugly, look like aliens and are undeserving of our home- she says they would have to be locked up in the bathroom when we have guests (yes, they, as in two cats). I told her that if it was between her or the cat, I would lock her up in the loo. She is very feline herself, and I told her that i saw her like this...

http://www.balinesen.ch/photoc21.htm

Now she won't sleep with me... I thought that was a compliment!

Does anyone concur? (with her?)

Confused???

Re: Cats and girlfriends

My dear friend, you have a lot to learn......

I am also a cat fan, blue burmese are my favourite, but....

You threatened to lock her in the loo.....

and..

You compared her appearance to something other than human...

and for these my friend, you will pay dearly. My advice is starting looking for another girlfriend, one who perhaps is willing to co-habitate with your feline masters.

Re: Cats and girlfriends

There are two types of people...

Dog people, and Cat people. Dogs have owners, Cats have employees.

I'm ever so slightly embarassed at the post. I had just been force-fed several glasses of fine red wine.

Re: Cats and girlfriends

I thought he compared his girlfriend to a cat, so maybe he couldn't tell the difference?

Seriously gooner - I like those cats too - but cats from the siamese family are seriously inbred and completely psychotic! They will wreck your house!

Re: Cats and girlfriends

I've only ever had Siamese, Balinese and Orientals... and it's because they are psychotic that I love them so. Remember the Aristocats?

We are Siamese, if you please...

Re: Cats and girlfriends

Hey gooner, "We are Siamese, if you please" was the song from Lady and the Tramp, not the Aristocats. They sang it as they demolished Darling and Jim's parlor room.

My husband and I went to a cat show last year, where we saw far uglier (or shall I say "far more exotic?") varieties than the ones you want. So tell your girlfriend to cheer up, it could be worse!

I know some people who remind me of certain animals - ostrich, owl, fish, etc... There was even once a woman who looked like one of the chickens from "Chicken Run." I have found that no matter how good my intentions were, people don't like hearing these things.

Re: Cats and girlfriends

If you want to see beautiful cats, you have to go to the International Cat Show in Horw (Luzern) on the 1st and 2nd of July. They are featuring the Siamese and three other similar breeds. I'm an ex Bengal cat breeder myself. Bengal are a cross of Asian wild leopards and short hairs like the Egyptian Mau. They have coats of silk and beautiful leopard prints with gold glitter. My mother cat's father won 2nd place Best Cat in Canada, so I'm not alone in thinking they are stunning! Check out the International Cat show program for more dates in Switzerland.

Hey Koko,

I went to see the lady from www.ofgoldencoast.ch in the hope of getting one of her Bengals. I am about to get either 2 bengals or a bengal and a lilac point siam kitten.

Re: Cats and girlfriends

Awesome!! I don't know this cattery, but it looks like a really healthy atmosphere. The picture above is of my four Bengals. They all have very different personalities and voices. I'm sure when you went to the cattery you heard how loud they can be!! I'm happy to see you're thinking about getting two. They love to play with each other, even as they get older.
Anyway, keep me posted, and if you have any questions, like what to look for, let me know.

Re: Cats and girlfriends

I'm not necessarily after show cats, but the boy I might get, 10 months old, recently won a competiion, he is 4f, marble, and so sweet. I never realised how talkative they were... which is whz I always loved my siamese. I can't wait to get owners again.

Check out Magic Jaya here...

I'm totally sold on the Bengals.

I agree, Koko! He's got a very masculine face. This is the one.
The song that comes to mind is ZZ Top....let's get those grunty guitar riffs going..."You know that every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man!"

I must have been a cat in heat in my other life.

Re: Cats and girlfriends

Hello Forum,

I'm going to admit to something which will no doubt bring on the wrath of the cat lovers: I'm not a fan of keeping cats indoors. I'm sorry, I used to think it was ok, but no longer. I'm not trying to Troll.

I founded a new appartment with my room mate, who brought her long haired cats with her. I was cool with this as I'm not too complicated. What I wasn't prepared for was that she makes no provision for allowing the cats out of the appartment.

Well, I think this is wrong. This is where my tolerance of having cats indoors started to fade. Cats are not on this Earth for the sole pleasure of humans and it's against their nature to be cooped up inside all day and night. They're not cute teddy bears to purely satisfy our emotional needs. The cats previously lived somewhere where they were allowed out, but now she/we live in a busier area, they remain indoors.

The cats are insanely bored. They are not fighters, but scratch, pee, poop and vomit outside of their litter tray every other day. They constantly wag their tails from side to side. They prowl around with a piercing meowing which is beginning to drive me crazy. Night time is the worst.

They jump up on the furniture - something which I find inappropriate - and I'm always shoo-ing them off the dining table, coffee table, sofa etc. The sofa is a particular bugbear because I have to get my vacuum cleaner out every time I want to sit down and the fabric is now so scratched my sofa looks terrible. I'm embarrased when people visit because there's hair everywhere, even 20 minutes after cleaning, and clothes are covered etc.

I also have to live with leaving my room door closed all the time for fear of having them pee on my bed - this has only happened once - or find faeces on the floor - happened often enough. Also issues such as clothes in the wardrobe being covered in hair is no joke when most of your suits are navy blue!

I'm beginning to despair that my room mate only views the world through the relationship she has with her cats. This relationship seems to 'trump' any human relationship. The cats are the be-all and end-all and frankly give weight to the 'wacky cat owner' cliché. I really like my room mate, she's a lovely girl, but somehow in my naïvity I believe humans ought to have a stronger voice than a dumb animal. It seems the cats are never to be inconvenienced but I am. How does that work?

(This is where I put on my flame-proof helmet! )

Can someone - a cat lover who understands how this might affect a human relationship - offer any advice? I don't believe I should have to start using a blanket over my beautiful sofa just so the cat hair is no longer an issue; I don't want to have to remember to keep my room door closed all the time so my room stays clean; I don't think it's right cats clamber over every surface just for me to have to follow them around cleaning, disinfecting etc. and I don't want to have to clean up poo because that's just yuck.

I've tried all the tricks such as citrus, pepper etc to no avail.

My room mate gives me a baffled look if I even bring up the subject: it's like she's blind to the fact that she's abusing her animals by not allowing them out. They poo and pee everywhere in protest. And she snuggles up to them and says how wonderful they are and "Mommy loves you" which is very weird. Perhaps I am not so uncomplicated as I'd like to think, but I'm beginning to wonder what the cat ownership need is about: fulfilling the cats or indeed only the owners needs?

She's going on holiday for two weeks and has asked me to look after the cats. I'm dreading it - they're a pain the moment she walks out of the door until she comes back: goodness knows what they'll be like for 14 days without 'Mommy'.

Please help!

Re: Cats and girlfriends

Max - I see two options....both of which mean saying goodbye to your flatmate. She goes - or you go. Fact is - the cats will stay with her and she won't change how she treats them. She probably won't even entertain constructive critisism of them.
