It usually leads to a vacuous conversation. Though I have never needed to speak to "Genius" many people have told me that is not a very accurate description of their experience.
I've gone through it a couple of times, and it's a bit like a corporate helpdesk - there's level 1, 2 and 3 support. The good guys are good, but you often have to wait a long time to get an appointment with one (London, an hour, Basel 30 minutes first time and nearly a week then second).

That said, I've not been to an Android Store for technical support, so it's hard to compare.

As for the usability of IOS that is purely subjective some love it and others hate it. I love the way in which I can change the app launcher and default apps if I want a different experience on Android.
Never had an iphone. Whenever, I had to do something with my wife's iphone I have always struggles due to the lack of the simple back button. I suppose it is now a matter of habbit in terms of preference.

You've got a point there.

If you take BMW, a car manufacturer which someone earlier in the thread stated was to cars what iPhones are to smart phones, then you have a basically boring albeit expensive and quality-built car which people continue to buy, and at regular intervals, replace with a newer version which isn't that dissimilar to the version they previously owned.

It's not hype - it's how a consumer society functions.
To be fair you don't have to buy a new one - there are also plenty of people around who buy them because they'll run for ten years with no issues.

iThings aren't that different - the build quality is generally high, and nobody is forcing you to buy a new one.

I've never actually replaced an iPhone due to age, in my family we've had 3G, 5 and 6 generations and apart from some breakage casualties and one loss the others are still in use as hand-me-downs.

Given that the first iPhone went on sale at the end of June 2007, I doubt that there are many people who would know whether any iPhone will run for ten years.

I've handed an ancient (6 years old) Orange San Francisco Android phone down to my son, and it works perfectly... although admittedly, given that he practically learned to read on an iPad, he finds its stunning 3.5" screen (same as the iPhone of the day) just slightly limiting.

Re: Apple -has another phone

Hi,

after watching the whole 2 hours...time I will never get back I was really expecting a lot more. The AR presentations were not very interesting apart overlaying the Sky and there was nothing particularly interesting about the iphone X apart from Face recognition.

I am not great Apple fan as they are normally copiers and extenders of other people ideas but this time I thought they might have produced something interesting.

One of the best things about the iphone X is the screen for which they pay Samsung 130 dollars so we can expect it or something better on Samsung phones.

Whatever you think about Apple I think it was missed opportunity.

Have fun
Martin

Top-end (256GB) iPhone X model: 1389 CHF

If you use it for 4 years, it's just under 1 CHF per day (0.95 CHF)

I'm pretty sure it's going to be the top-item on many Christmas wish-lists...

You're a funny onion. A declared non-fan, yet you sit through two hours of blurb and complain they wasted your time. Get to the pub next year instead, and watch the 60 second highlights on YouTube.

Other than the obvious battery limitations, I agree with that. However, it looks like noone wants to do anything about it.

I for one would be totally fine if samsung or apple made the phones 2-3mms thicker while doubling the battary life.
I think that has been hacked around by USB battery packs. I suspect putting larger phones in is too much of a liability risk.

Re: Apple -has another phone

Hi,

in answer to your questions. I work in IT and so I watch the keynotes from the 3 major companies. Microsoft, Google and Apple. Microsoft is usually the most tech heavy and interesting for me, followed by the Google session as they also have some really interesting technology and are leading in some interesting AI areas. I also watch Apple as I think I need to have an objective view on their products and technology. They are much more marketing heavy and will never give credit to other companies which I think it is bad. Microsoft praised Amazon for their work on AWS for example and Google will demo stuff on IOS and not just on Android.

Today I watched the Apple presentation as it had been hyped that they would show a lot more AR stuff than they did and that part fell flat and the phones had been leaked and are not that interesting.

For different views on politics I will look at the BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, Russia Today and even Fox News to get a rounded view.

The reason why I stated it wasted 2 hours as I expected a lot more especially in terms of AI and AR. AI is looking like what mobile was for Microsoft.

Have fun
Martin

My personal favourite is the iPhone fanbois who beat their chests about how much money Apple makes from their phones, as if that somehow proves their superiority...

But in the meantime, I can assure you there is no tech fan as rabid as an iPhone fanboi. They're a subspecies of the monocular, tunnel vision-afflicted Mac-user fraternity, with an enormous chip on their shoulder.

In Glasgow there are two football main teams. Rangers and Celtic (filth). The problem with Celtic (filth) is that they are obsessed with Rangers. You could ask them who scored in the Celtic (filth) game at the weekend, but they wouldn't know; but they could tell you every time Rangers lost in the past year from memory.

Android fans are like the Celtic (filth) ones. They seem to care about the competition more than about their own phones.

Re: Apple -has another phone

I just watched the BBC's two-minute wrap-up of the Apple presentation (which is about as much time as I'm prepared to spend on it or any other tech marketing show-and-tell). Am I correct in understanding that the iPhone X's facial recognition feature didn't work on cue? And that the phone doesn't offer a fingerprint sensor at all, even as a backup? And I love the comment about the wireless charging concept that Palm introduced taking 8 years to become "mainstream" (although Samsung and others have had Qi charging for a while now). By the way, is the wireless charging Qi, or yet another Apple-only system?

Really not an impressive launch at all; Apple has not introduced anything new or special. Very disappointing.

Another classic Android fan trait. Berate Apple and the iPhone for not having features which Android has had for literally YEARS.

Then when Apple implement them; berate them again for taking so long to implement them.

Re: Apple -has another phone

Hi,

It was funny when the facial recognition failed, that was one of the highlights. I think once you have upgraded to Android you look back and wonder why you took so long to do it. Features that Android users take as standard are suddenly sold by Apple to the media as something new. All other tech companies recognise other tech companies. For example Microsoft praised Amazon for AWS when the started Azure etc.

To be honest with Apple launches it is the press "advertisting" that you read afterwards which is annoying. It is simply some catch up models from the number 3 in the smartphone business. If covered it should be on the business pages and not on the front page.

Have fun
Martin

Speaking of business news, Apple shares (AAPL.O) had the second-biggest fall in value on the S&P index yesterday, following the disappointing presentation of the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus.

The Apple iPhone X... a $1000 phone using 3 year old Samsung OLED screen technology, 3 year old Samsung Face Unlock technology that they couldn't get to work in a demo, and 5 year old Wireless Qi technology. Happy to see innovation isn't dead. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...hone-x-launch/
