Apple -has another phone

Hi,

as it is the Apple presentation on Tuesday I thought I would open a thread. So far there seems to a lot hype around a new phone that will allow Apple to catch up with technology widely available on other phones such as no bevels,OLED screen, wireless charging, lack of physical buttons and face recognition but that it will come at a very high price. None of those seem particularly interesting as they are already available elsewhere.

AR seems to be one interesting thing but is that enough to sell the phone ?

Have fun

Martin

For those who have iPhones these will be very welcome upgrades (especially wireless charging), and of course it will all work beautifully

TBH I'm quite board of the iPhone and all smart phones. Nothing has had the wow factor for quite sometime now.

Hi

But they are all simple and incremental changes that would not merit a price increase. They are not anything that should result in a price increase.

What about AR? Would that make you pay more?

I expect they work as well as they do on all the other smart phones. it is easier to be the follower than the leader

Have fun

Re: Apple -has another phone

it's impressive that Apple managed to design a telephone that is almost as innovative as the S8. LOL-fact is of course that Apple is heavily dependent on Samsung ffor the production of the iPhone.

The S8 although beautifully built and bristling with innovation is a fingerprint magnet with gimmicky edge screen and a long thin frame that makes it feel unwieldy. I also have a Note 5 as my spare and that looks and feels much better.

P.S I reckon this thread should have a warning icon

Re: Apple -has another phone

would be nice if apple started to care a little about their uses and also lowered their SAR values, one of the highest now. Funny how samsung can make phones with lower values

Even if you don't know if the hype is valid, doesn't hurt to have lower exposure, just in case ay?

Re: Apple -has another phone

You don't have to buy one, do you?

Do you also go into Mercedes car-forums, complaining that you can get some features of the S-Class in a Toyota Yaris?

Are you maybe jealous?

You know that don't need to follow the keynote, if you don't want to?
I certainly never follow presentations of Android phones, because I don't give AF about them.

I have a Mac at home, the iPhone works nicely with it and I don't have to share my data with Google and their advertisers (for which I get nothing in return, and as a Thank-you, no updates after 18 months).

Given the latest leaks, I believe Apple has made vast improvements over the face-recognition technology available elsewhere. Also, because they sell a lot of identical phones and have a large percentage of their user-base on the lastest version of their OS, developers can and do actually use these features in their apps. "Flagship features" of Android phones often stay simple gimmicks in sample apps.

AR will be a big thing. Even if you disregard all serious applications of the technology, it will have a huge impact on online-shopping and even offline-shopping.
E-Commerce will never be the same.
And I say that as somebody who does almost no online-shopping and can't really understand people who have an Amazon Prime subscription, ordering stuff weekly (or more often). But even I can see the appeal of seeing furniture projected into my living room - or how two pairs of shirts and trousers would look on me, compared. And for people that order a lot of stuff online, that is sure going to be convenient.

The recent share-price climb might be more related to innovations around the watch. There's always rumors of reliable, non-invasive blood-sugar monitoring.
If such a product would turn up, it would be a literal license to print money.

Yes, it's incredibly expensive, but you don't have to buy a new one every year, regardless of price.

I expect the top-tier "iPhone X" to sell for well over 1200 CHF here.

Is it financially sane to spend so much money on a phone?
Absolutely not!

OTOH, there are probably a countless number of other expenses you could find in peoples' lifestyles that add-up to similar amounts - or even more money (car leases, apartments that are slightly too large and a bit too expensive, rarely used gym-memberships, useless insurances, convenience-food, brand-name shoes, brand-name clothes, expensive vacations in remote destinations even though you can go for a stroll at the lake here, for free - the list is endless).

Do we want to define a "minimal" lifestyle-guide that people should adhere to, so that they don't "overpay" for something that can be had cheaper elsewhere?

If somebody wants to spend that much money on a phone, why should (s)he have to defend that decision?

They want you to use bluetooth ear-pieces or headsets.

But you're right, the SAR values are disappointing.

I hope somebody gets to ask Cook or Joswiak sometime why they can't get those values down.

gigabit LTE next year.
Nite 8 and Galaxy support it, Ipbone doesn't use Qualcom.

The same can be said about most smartphone generations including Samsung Galaxy series (S7 to S8 was nothing significant). The new iPhone will have faster hardware and GPU in addition to the new software features... what else do you expect at this stage that will really shake things up? The industry as a whole is in an evolutionary stage as opposed to an innovative one.

Basically this. Xiaomi now have a great design, top spec internals, and also have dual SIM pretty much as standard which is awesome. The only thing stopping me going to Xiaomi is the lack of waterproofing which I consider essential for a smartphone.

bluetooth causes radiation too though, I am aware wifi does as well but at lower rates although they are increasing that too over the years to higher levels

many don't think it doesnt do anything but who knows, I know it gives me a migraine.

So use the iris scanner or face recognition (in that order of preference). Only in very bright sunlight (when you'd be squinting to keep your eyes open) would you need to turn your phone over and use the fingerprint sensor.

seems like there will be 3 versions of new iphone: https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/08/ios-1...one-8-details/

other major innovations are animated emoticons, new wallpapers and, as option on the iPohne X only, the wired airpods.

If it has a proper earphone port I'll buy one.

If not, I'll probably pick up another 6S and put in a drawer until I need it.
