How music makes me remember

Bit late for a Friday thread, I know. There's a few songs that really evoke strong feelings and I sometimes struggle to understand why.

Be warned, I don't have profound musical tastes..

During the first couple of weeks after my daughter was born, I used to lie on the sofa, with her asleep on my tummy, listening to Umbrella by Rihanna. She hates the song.

When she first fell over and scraped her knee, I sung The Streets, Dry your eyes mate to her. She has the world's loudest laugh to confirm I am a rubbish singer.

When my first serious relationship ended, I must have played Alice Cooper, full volume, over and over Your cruel device. Your blood, like ice. One look, could kill. I had a Ford Sierra and a leather jacket at the time. Not a great look.

Either that, or Sinead O'Connor, Nothing Compares 2U

These days, anything by Leonard Cohen cures my bad moods, Everybody knows.

My daughter still has the world's loudest giggle.

Have a great weekend.

Hmmm...hundreds of those, really.

And songs we played in gigs or sang in symphonies, all sorts. Or piano auditions. Most of audio memories recall a particularly vivid moment for me.

I love Leonard Cohen too...still regret I haven't been to any of his concerts.

Chopin is a real favourite to cure my bad "everythings"...

Re: How music makes me remember

1981, cramming for my Maths 'O' Level the following morning. John Peel comes on the radio in tears and announces that Bob Marley has died and plays 'Redemption Song'. That track instantly takes me back to that time and place in great detail.

'Quicksand' by Bowie is so wrapped up in a very specific moment in time, that I haven't been able to listen to it since 1983.

Re: How music makes me remember

I was too young to care about the vietnam war when that was happening. Long after the war ended, a multi-part documentary was shown on TV and I happened to watch one episode. The song "A whiter shade of pale" was playing as still images were being shown at the closing credits. This part vividly comes to mind whenever I hear this song. The lyrics are cryptic and I don’t think it has anything to do with wars, but it strangely stirs up your emotions about it.

Thanks to youtube, I found that exact part of my memory

Re: How music makes me remember

I recommend this series of programmes on BBC Radio 3 http://bbc.co.uk- also available as podcasts (I believe)

all about memory and music, memories triggered by music etc.

Do his songs remind you of something as well?

Oh yes. Lightfoot in particular reminds me of my youth in Canada in the '70s (as does BTO).

Canadian Railroad Trilogy reminds me of some time I spent in the North.

Not that I'm a big fan of C&W, but Lightfoot was just "there", and like Harry Chapin, he wrote some moving ballads.
