Re: Letís discuss about cryptocurrencies...any fans?

Just curious... Does anyone reckon crypto currencies are age related? I've not met anyone who went through Black Wednesday who doesn't scream "Bullshit" when they're mentioned. From my days working at the bookies, there are 4 types of gamblers (call them investors if you will). In order of popularity...
1. Low stakes, low odds
2. High stakes, low odds
3. Low stakes, high odds
4. High stakes, high odds

And then there's crypto currency investors who are betting on an invisible horse!

I would not say investors though, just speculators.

May I ask you a question? What is the difference between any fiat currency and Bitcoin? Don't you think that all these trillions of USD printed, out of thin air, by Federal Reserve is also another ''invisible horse'' ?

I was working at the LSE on Black Wednesday. I'm not screaming "Bullshit" when the charts look like this one

Even that chart is out of date. This one is more current.

https://ycharts.com/indices/%5ENYB/ytd_return

Thoughts.. I like BTC and ETH. Litecoin is on my radar, no interest in anything else right now. I was in Morocco for a week recently, 2nd holiday entirely funded from BTC that cost around $325 some years back.

Where do you see BTC going, considering corrections on the way ? ETH has been stuck for more than a month now...not following really why is that so, but I think going to explode after that long consolidation period.

Have not seen though a significant consolidation for BTC.

As you very sincerely keep asking the same question again and again, let me say this regarding difference in Fiat currencies & BTC etc.:
- Fiat currencies are backed by willingness and capacity of issuing governments.
- Governments tax activity and hence always have a revenue source, fair or unfair.

Bitcoin has neither of these. We don't even know who created it, what does it represent, barriers to entry are non-existent for a new flavour of the year, BTC always need to convert to real cash for paying for goods and importantly government taxes (and no Chiasso accepting upto Fr250.- does not count), the volatility means its not a good store of value, blah blah, the anti-money-laundering concerns mean that it will always have regulatory fears, blah blah.

But you are smart to have made lots of money. Really smart. Congratulations. BTC may trade 100k, but for above reasons I am out (said in the tone of BBC Lions' Den).

If you are waiting for world economic order to fail, keep warm.

P.S. This UBS report does a very elegant job of explaining if you have patience.

Thank you very much for your answer. The report seems very interesting, I will take the time to read it in depth.

Re: Letís discuss about cryptocurrencies...any fans?

Here's a great story for anyone who thinks cryptocurrencies are in any way safe.

Background: Parity, an Ethereum wallet company, had a code bug that caused $169m of Ethereum currency to be irretrievably lost for their users.

And then:

Ethereum prices are currently $330 per coin, and have risen slightly since the Parity snafu.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/11...law_not_fixed/

I've read some people on other sites saying that is natural supply and demand - there's less now, so those remaining are worth more.

To which I say they are idiots - you could argue the same if a company sold appliances that had resale value but randomly exploded during use "hey, there's less now, it's a great investment", but because that's real world people understand the risk cost of being blown up...

Re: Letís discuss about cryptocurrencies...any fans?

They're not irretrievably lost, Ethereum devs can reverse transactions to unfreeze the tokens, which is what they did after the DAO hack, leading to a chain split. Parity have form and ironically the bug that led to this situation was one introduced while fixing another bug that allowed a large number of tokens to be stolen.

The supply and demand you refer to is not what you think, as unlike Bitcoin there will be no finite number of Ether mined, in fact new tokens are created at the rate of 150 t0 200 thousand per week. The demand is for gas (computation) to power the smart contracts that run on the Ethereum Virtual Machine, Ether is required to to buy the gas.

Re: Letís discuss about cryptocurrencies...any fans?

Apparently there's a new ETH (that's Ethereum for the purposes of this thread) buzz called CryptoKitties. People actually pay to buy virtual cats. I don't even know what to say about this.
