Tuesday Friday Thread

"A 300-year-old "secrets of sex" manual banned for its shocking content is due to be sold at auction next month. Dating back to 1720, Aristotle's Masterpiece Completed In Two Parts, The First Containing the Secrets of Generation, offers a range of advice.

Here are a few tips from which the Georgians were lucky enough to benefit."

See advice under the following headings:

Don't lie with beasts
Stare at your husband
Eat the right things
Don't rush off
Employ gender selection
Remember men come first

All the ingredients for a happy marriage then.

Erm... I have a copy of that. Seriously.

I knew it was old, but...

(This isn't the first time that I've discovered a £20 curiosity might be worth a bit more.)

Someone has to ask...

Would you describe yourself as "happily married"?

I can't find it. I've got a horrible feeling that I gave it away as I couldn't make head of tail of it.

I feel sick...

You can't find your wife?

(never mind the question of if it's ok to refer to her as "it")

Re: Tuesday Friday Thread

Feeling genuinely gutted about this today.

I remember picking up a copy of this, thinking it was actually something by or about Aristotle, then being disappointed by the fact it wasn't, and slightly shocked by the frankly bizarre nature of the illustrations. Once I'd established it wasn't what I thought it was, I never really bothered to look through it and it languished in the antiquarian section of my library for years.

I can't remember giving it away, but it isn't anywhere to be found and I can usually lay my hands on anything I'm looking for within a minute or two. It must have gone during one of my occasional book culls. I've always regretted such culls (and haven't had one since I moved to Switzerland) and now I regret them even more than ever!

On a happier note, a few years ago I discovered that a book I picked up for £20 (listed at £90, but the nice ladies who were minding the shop saw how much I was enjoying it and gave me a hefty discount as "we can see it's going to a good home") only comes up for auction once every ten years or so and usually commands prices around £3000. I'd never sell it, mind, but it's nice to know it's there. It's also a really good book!

It makes me wonder what other gems are hiding in my library...

Still sick to the stomach about this little "delight", though.

It looks like a 300 year old well thumbed copy of Razzle you'd find tucked into a random hedge or under some bushes in the local park.
