Currency for Croatia + Bosnia & Herzegovina

Derp i have only just realised that these countries are outside the eurozone

Due a vacation there next month, we will be spending most of the time in Croatia but likely one day in Bosnia and Herzegovina (just a day trip, no hotel)

What currency to take? Are euros acceptable? If so would it still be best to take hrk/bam as well? For driving across borders are there tolls and if so which currency. Tia

Re: Currency for Croatia + Bosnia & Herzegovina

In Croatia, credit cards or Kuna (Croatian currency), some places take EUR but not all.

Re: Currency for Croatia + Bosnia & Herzegovina

In Croatia, you will need to use "Kuna", in Bosnia "Mark". There are exchanges in both Croatia and Bosnia in center of the cities.

Also, most of the bars/restaurants will accept cards. Current rate:

1 CHF = 6.3 Croatian Kuna
1 CHF = 1.66 Bosnian Mark

(Keep in mind that these rates are from Google, so you may expect something like 6.2 for Kuna and 1.55 for Mark).

Bonus tip:

If you a "foodie" person, don't miss Bosnian Kebabs (Cevapi)

For Croatia, take a Revolut card (see the dedicated thread).

Iíve been to Croatia the last two summers and it works perfectly fine amd the FX rates on the app beat all the rates Iíve seen offered by a good 2-3%.

If you need a card I also have some spare promotional ones I can send you. (Postage on you)

Re: Currency for Croatia + Bosnia & Herzegovina

If you use only euros you're likely to get unfavourable exchange rates, a bit like in switzerland when shops/bars say 1 euro = 1 chf, and are probably not accepted everywhere. Also you have to pay highway tolls and you will get back kunas if you use euros.
Credit cards are good but sometimes they might not be accepted so I prefer withdrawing and using kunas. Avoid Euronet bankomat though, very bad rates for tourists.

Converting to Kuna s expensive(10% or so) here so change a little and do the rest in Croatia. You get really good rate there
