I'm doing everything wrong, man. I started with jazz and classics and now I listen to rap.

When I listen to rap, I only listen to Italian rap (Celentano, Jovanotti, 883).

Awwww.

Also, in unrelated news, the wiki also informed me that there is german gangsta rap.
I am fascinated.
If anyone needs me, I'll be soundcloud-ing and spotify-ing this evening.

Kollegah, Farid Bang, Haftbefehl .....
My students told me ...

I think they are great businessman with a good marketing concept ^^

I'm super uninformed when it comes to german rap.
So far I've gotten as far as Sido. Or our local Dido.

Clearly I'm in need of an education. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Art rewards for popular political agenda? Mais oui! Why are you surprised? It is politically correct. And majorly marketed and now it will sell even more. It is a bit like Coke.

Can't wait for prizes awarding social realism again.

The oddity is that everything pilatus has written is correct :
It is racist , homophobic etc and according to Sowell and others it exacerbates all that is bad about black culture with the undoubted knock on effects on it's consuming generation. Yet it is "politically correct" - which demonstrates clearly who the true racists in modern society are.

I listened to the spectator podcast on "drill rap" at the weekend - and what is going on in London is truly astounding.

Don't be such a hater.

Next time you will be saying that this https://www.google.ch/amp/s/amp.theg...dia-phenomenon

is not real literature?! Who says that the art has to be good (or long) to win awards?! You just need a suitable (partisan) pedigree.

I doubt it. That would actually make sense. It is just a product promotion..marketing. Or fear of applying the same criteria they have been using right up to know. Meritocracy does not sell.

Maybe in the past, comitees were more subtle.

Everybody admired Ernest Hemingway for his war stuff and his unabashed political views. But they gave him the Nobel prize for a long-winded story about a man who catches a fish.

It's a way of bringing the author into the spotlight but letting the audience join the dots.

Maybe that subtelty has gone missing somewhat?

Hehe, me too, I'm not that methodic actually. Rap music receiving awards, that's a bit shocking for many, I see their point. But as I said, times change.

What's next, will they award graffiti? That's a phenomenon too (considered a genre, actually). I would love to see that, if only for the (general) outrage.

I can imagine the fun our children or grandchildren will have if they'll ever read these discussions, or better said this type of discussion. ;-)

When I listen to Celentano, I listen to other songs of his ;-) He still rocks. Am not into rap that much but I discovered a few gems. Some are pretty cool.

Same. I love graffiti. Banksy is one of my favorite artists, overall. I guess I'm kind of weird when it comes to art. I don't go with the general sense when it comes to it. I care about what the artist is trying to say. That's about it. Doesn't matter what kind of art it is.

But then again, some things are just frigging awesome. Like Van Gogh's Starry Night. Or Hokusai's Great Wave.

At one point, I wanted to have my living room wall covered in Graffiti. But the good kind and nice artists aren't cheap. I'm still dabbling with some ideas though.

It doesn't shock after 50 years or rap/activism, recent outspoken and magnificent black music history. To think that people disagree with the award because rap would shock....might be a bit naieve.

"They" already do. We do, don't we. The world isn't as stupid or lazy as the marketers think or whoever think that selling art awards systems to promote marketing will work.

But a schematic stuff that only idolizes violence or victimhood mindset wears off fast. It does not empower the real victims.

Oh yeah, Banksy is good. No, you're not weird for not going with the general sense when it comes to art, rest assured. I'm still fascinated by Dali, his right amount of craziness in approaching different themes and genius techniques. One of the many I'm fascinated by...he's just more important for the moment.
Oh, but we could talk days on. I have to cook dinner!

Btw. Was trying to imagine a living room wall covered in graffiti but I think it would depend on the place itself. A bit carefulness here. But I did see absolutely great ideas coming from "unlikely sources", wish you good luck.
