Secure storage for phones near the US consulate in Zürich?

Do any of you know of options for secure storage for phones or other electronic devices near the US consulate in Zürich? Anything closer than the lockers at the HB?

Looking for something akin to the bakery near the embassy in Bern that will for a fee store your devise while you are at the embassy. (Does that place still exist/do that?)

Have to go to the Zürich consulate soon, and while going phone-less for the time of the appointment is fine I unfortunately can't be out of contact for the 4-5 hours it will take to get into the city and home again.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Until someone comes up with a better answer, there are lockers at Stadelhofen station, which is a bit closer than the HB.

DB, when did you last see the lockers? I looked for them recently (not in connection with a consulate visit but wanted to minimise what I was lugging around before heading elsewhere) They are no longer outside near platform closest the station buildings, unless I missed them.

The US embassy in Stockholm will keep your phone at the security check to collect when leaving, guess the luxury concierge service

Re: Secure storage for phones near the US consulate in Zürich?

Thanks DB.

Tasebo, looking quickly at the Stadelhofen Bahnhof page on the SBB site, Schliessfächer are listed as an on site amenity. But unless I've missed it (always a possibility given my dimming eyesight and addled brain) the site does not show where the lockers are. I might have to go down the day before and reconnoiter.

10 years ago (the last time I renewed my passport and thus visited the consulate) I rarely used a phone, traveling without one would never have caused me a second thought. Shame how expectations of contractibility have taken over our lives...

I can confirm this. At platform one, close to the tunnel towards HB.
Different sizes of lockers, so even a IPhone XS max will fit

Not really. The existence of cellphones has enabled us to do many things that 25 years ago would have been "amazing", so we've ordered our lives around the new possibilities that they give us. Nothing surprising there, nor anything to be ashamed of.

I also found that link but I'm not sure it's the Schliessfächer / lockers because Stadelhofen also operates a luggage-to-the-airport service and this could be the link for that.

The lockers used to be on the platform, along from the Post bancomat. If I'm in that area later today, I'll have a look and ask in the station office.

Scroll to the left, they are at the far left, the others are more in the middle.

Ah-ha! Didn't know it scrolled left . That's where I remember them being now I've seen it.

They still are on Platform 1. I think it's 6 chuffs now and I don't think they take 5s.

Re: Secure storage for phones near the US consulate in Zürich?

I've read that in the UK people have telephones so small that they can insert them into their bottoms and transport them to places such as prisons, evading both sniffer dogs and metal detectors.

Might be worth a try, better than paying for a locker ?

No, no, no old bean. You have it the wrong way round, it has nothing to do with the size of the phones. British arses are of superior design

The nice Swiss man at the Consulate will put your phone on the shelf while you go inside to do your business.
No need to wander off looking for a locker!

Have you been there recently? I vaguely remember something similar 10 years ago, but the consulate's website says:
https://ch.usembassy.gov/embassy/loc...erland/ca-zrh/

Security Notice:

Allowed Items: You may bring one modest-size bag into the waiting room area. The size of bags allowed is: 35 cm (length) x 30 cm (height) x 20 cm (width). Bags larger than this size will not be allowed.

You are not allowed to enter the U.S. Consular Agency with any of the following items:

Electronic or battery-operated devices, including mobile phones, digital diaries, digital watches, pagers, cameras, audio/video cassettes, compact discs, MP3s, floppy disks, laptops, portable music players and e-Readers

Food and liquid items
Sealed envelopes or packages
Cigarettes, cigars, match boxes, and lighters
Sharp objects such as scissors, pen knives or nail files
Weapons or explosive materials of any kind

Please note this list is not exhaustive. Other items may be prohibited at the discretion of the security staff. There is no facility at the U.S Consular Agency to store prohibited items. You must make arrangements to store these items before entering.

(My underline.)

I've tried to call the consulate several times, but have been unable to reach a human being.

Have to go in tomorrow, so I guess it will be sans phone. Will report back afterwards...

Re: Secure storage for phones near the US consulate in Zürich?

Good luck, meloncollie

I went 4 years ago to renew my passport and the stupid person I was supposed to see claimed she’d sent me an email cancelling the appointment and further that I’d not given her a phone number. I had the email I sent, complete with phone number. I was livid.

So I called Bern and got a human who actually apologized and told me to mail everything to Bern R post. Got my passport back 2 weeks or so later. I gather it’s not so easy anymore.

Re: Secure storage for phones near the US consulate in Zürich?

I am sorry I am nowhere near there and not available tonorrow but is there no one who can possibly help MC out by waiting with her phone near the consulate?

It might be hard for some to comprehend but sometimes there are reasons why one must absolutely be reachable by phone.
