Dutch Man Sues to Lower His Age

Okay, it's not quite Friday, but we haven't had a Friday thread for while now so here goes.

"A Dutch pensioner has started a legal battle to legally change his age and boost his dating prospects.

Emile Ratelband, 69, wants to shift his birthday from 11 March 1949 to 11 March 1969, comparing the change to identifying as being transgender.

"You can change your name. You can change your gender. Why not your age?" he told Dutch paper De Telegraaf.

A local court in the city of Arnhem, south-east of Amsterdam, is expected to rule on the case within four weeks.

Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported the court was sceptical of the suit, saying there was no legal mechanism allowing a person to change their birth date.

But Mr Ratelband argued he feels discriminated against because of his age, and that it was affecting his employment chances and his success rate on the dating app, Tinder.

"When I'm 69, I am limited. If I'm 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car. I can take up more work," he said.

"When I'm on Tinder and it say I'm 69, I don't get an answer. When I'm 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position."

The Netherlands' constitution expressly prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of age.

Mr Ratelband is a media personality and motivational speaker, who is a trainer in neurolinguistic programming.

He voiced the character Vladimir Trunkov in the Dutch-language version of the Pixar film Cars 2."

He is a bit the national nut. Happy for him that he has some attention again.

Love this story

Why didn't he just quietly lie about his age on Tinder? With all the publicity of his legal action literally EVERYONE will know he's 69.

That is probably why he did it, to get attention and to be in the news again

Re: Dutch Man Sues to Lower His Age

He makes a valid point though. Similar to the pastafaris, he points out the weaknesses in a society where only some groups are allowed to claim discrimination and equal rights but not others. Who decides who is in and who is out? Who decides which cause is legitimate and which is “a Friday joke”?

But ageism seems to be well protected in the Netherlands. He's trying to misrepresent is age in an official capacity via the courts.

OK, so it could just be a publicity stunt to raise awareness (as well as a bit of attention-seeking "poor me" stuff) but say the courts ruled that you could state whatever age you felt like. Can someone in their mid twenties then say, actually I feel like I want to be 65, give up work and claim my retirement?

20 years less pension money. The state should be all for it.

I would have liked it to be as follows:
- between 12 and 17: 18 years old
- between 18 and 25: 18 years old
- between 26 and 40: 25 year old
- between 41 and 50: 29 years old
- as of 50: 67 years old

Unless you live in the US, in which case you need to change the 18 to 21 (my daughter said that the worst part of moving to the US was the three months she had to wait until she was 21).

Re: Dutch Man Sues to Lower His Age

What is different from a male identifying as woman competing in sports as a woman? There are huge monetary benefits available in sports.

Or the fact that in Switzerland women retire two years earlier than men...

Man/woman, young/old. Why do we accept transition in one area but not the other?

Because what this guy is proposing isn't "transition", it's simply "deception".

He's not actually changing anything as you would with, say, gender. He remains the same age but is just telling everyone he's younger. He wants to go a step further and formalise his deception in a court of law.

By doing this he's, rather ironically, further reinforcing prejudice about age.

Re: Dutch Man Sues to Lower His Age

People always laugh at him and find him a nutcase.

I am on the minority who thinks he is actually damn smart. He was reading books about self-empowerment and all such, and decided that he could sell such crap better than anybody else, he acted like a fool, but that act brought him many millions and fame.

In the immortal words of Mr Bowie.

'Time may change me but I can't change time.'

He has spoken. No age change for you.
