Cuil - the world's biggest search engine ?

I just heard from the Sydney Morning Herald about this new search engines that supposedly outperforms Google.

The search engine: http://www.cuil.com/

The article: http://www.smh.com.au/news/biztech/h...e#contentSwap1

It would be good to have some feedback.

Supposedly?

I gave it a try and found it an annoying experience. I'd love to see someone else knock Google from the top spot, but I don't think these are the guys.

Re: Cuil - the world's biggest search engine ?

I got this message on Cuil:

We didn’t find any results for “falafel recipe”

Some reasons might be...
  • a typo. Please check your spelling.
  • your search includes a term that is very rare. Try to find a more common substitute.
  • too many search terms. Please try fewer terms.
Finally, try to think of different words to describe your search.

Google gave me 324000 hits for the same string...

Every week a new Google-killer appears and is as quickly forgotten as its PR release.

This one is notable because of the ex-google folks involved.

I thought that the way the results are arranged in columns to be a jarring experience.

Me too. After all the hype I was expecting something much, much better.

Perhaps they should have named it laym.

Last edited by gregv; 28.07.2008 at 21:52. Reason: layum is lamer than laym.

They have time to improve. Ms Patterson needs to expend the required effort to render her company sufficiently attractive to her former employer so that she can say it was worth her while when she becomes a Googler again following the acquisition.

"English forum"
Google: Result no 1
Cuil: Not on front page, took me several seconds to establish it wasn't because the front page is so busy.

I won't use this again, it's like what ask (result number 2) were trying to do before they decided to just copy Google, but not implemented so well.

Don't knock it guys. Competition is good. I don't like how it lays out the search results though.

Competition is good, but any new search engine has to be better than Google but also deal with the fact that people are used to using Google to search, there has to be a massive incentive to change habits and I don't see it happening any time soon.

I heard this on DRS radio news yesterday, but as I only heard the URL, had no idea how to spell it. I assumed it was 'cool.com'.

Cuil falls flat on its face for local searches. eg. Lighting Design züri oberland draws a blank, but google.ch give 731 results...

Any new search engine needs some time to build up its search index. That wasn't different when Google started. It will get better every day.

I like the way how it automatically tries to find relevant tags for the search query, same as tagging posts on this forum.

Re: Cuil - the world's biggest search engine ?

I find it amazing how much press this search engine has received...they must have some really good media realtions/public relations people and connections. They were the headline story on cnn.com the other day, and have been in stories throughout world newspapers. So, I tried it out and was thoroughly disappointed as all my search attempts brought up little or no results. As far as I can tell, the biggest difference this engine is hyping up is that they do not retain any private information about their users--no url, no history, etc. I'll give them some time to improve and try them again, but at this point I am not impressed...and, I find their name to be annoying--not sure how to pronounce it or why it was chosen (any vocabulary experts want to help me with that one?).

The word is Irish, according to this article it is supposed to mean knowledge, but as far as I know that is incorrrect. The word for knowledge would be eolas. So far as remember "cúil" means back or behind!.
