The other forum I moderate

As it's nearly Friday, let's discuss how you moderate your other forum and why it's much better than EF so that we can all learn from it.

On the forum I moderate, we all agree and need no polls.

My forum uses a version of the software that isn't old enough to go to secondary school.

On the other forum I moderate there are flying unicorns. And nice people who don't hate me for being a mod.

There are such people here, I'm just not sure about the ratio of nice to haters . I can't comment on the presence of unicorns here although I suspect that any that might be here might be pink and invisible.

Could go either way. I'm always open to hear how others mod, while keeping in mind that different communities require different approaches.

It's a motorcycle group, albeit not one that is into fetish.

Mainly I vet people who want to join, and ban the occasional idiot that the other admin let join.

i.e. if your FB info doesn't include enough photos of products of the relevant marque, you are gone, same if you start trying to sell a lot of unrelated crap.

Seriously though, I only help as an Admin in a EE related group of a long term

And all my Blogs are read only anyway and members are vetted. Keeps the rabble out

Well, I'll go serious.

I help moderate a gaming forum and as some of you may know they can get rough at times, though ours seems to be pretty tame in comparison. There are only 3 active mods including me and the other 2 don't really join in discussons that much, though they'll sometimes offer info/advice and of course delete posts/threads and ban if needed.

When I was asked if I'd like to become a mod the main examples I had were from this forum and also the old titan quest one where there was only one mod around, but he was there nearly all the time and happily chatted away helping others, etc, etc. Since that's what I was doing on the forum anyway I just carried on more or less the same, but - and for me it's a big but - I no longer get involved in slanging matches or when a thread starts going downhill. I like a good argument as much as the next person and had participated in a few there before I became a mod, but I don't feel it would be right to do that now. My "job" is to keep an eye on things, step in if needed to bring a thread back on track, calm things down and if that's not possible then close the thread or issue some warnings/temp bans if needed. Sometimes those bans will be permanent if required. I deliberately took a step back from getting involved when threads start going awol. Believe me there have been times when I wished I could say a few less than complimentary words, but I haven't. I leave that to others and hope that when doing so they stay in the forum's guidelines so I don't have to reprimand them in turn. I don't feel a mod can always be a member of the forum; most of the time yes, if you're giving advice/info, generally chatting, etc. But not when a thread goes wrong, then you don't add fuel to the fire, you extinguish it however you need to.

Also because I'm around on the forum more than the other mods, I'm more visible. If I don't uphold the forum rules then why should anyone else? In many ways moderators set the tone of a forum; what we're prepared to put up with and what we're not. Me deleting a post, issuing a warning, closing a thread or yes, banning someone sends a clear message of what I will or will not tolerate.
