Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

If you have another machine to plug it into that could be worth a go (also try other physical ports on your machine).
Is it the 'standard' USB connection or one of those 'fancy' usb sticks with one of those flat connectors that can be used in the standard port - one of your posts indicated it might be the latter - maybe send a pic?
I think if it's the latter and the copper has partly worn away you may just get lucky in another port (any port in a storm). Either way would be an encouraging that the data could be recovered
Balance of DIY vs. 'professional help' depends on the importance of the stuff on it. I lost stuff in the past that couldn't be recovered - most vexing.
Every now and again I think about backing up and remember "Jesus Saves" (those Latin American chaps certainly know a thing or two about computers)

.... and over the last days, the squirrel I befriended became a little 'over friendly' and wanted to take our relationship to the next level. Unfortunately I may have been a little brusque. The shock has turned her white and now she just sits there, bushy tail lank and drooping with a lonely tear suspended jewel-like at whiskers end.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

If you already tried all the "basic stuff" that's mentioned on the "various DIY" websites (or was posted in this thread), try putting it into your freezer (not the fridge!) - leave it for about 30-60min (not longer, obviously)

Plug it in straight afterwards and see if it gets recognized. If so, get your data out asap.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

If it's USB3 capable one it may be that those pins are bust, but try connecting to a USB 2 port. Worked for me with a similar issue.

Edit: in fact I think I deliberately broke off the 3.0 pins to fix the issue and then it worked. Can't exactly remember. But I got my data back.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

It's hit and miss doing data recovery. It really depends what's wrong with the drive. Might be a cracked solder joint on the connector in the stick, aforementioned bent pins or a dead chip inside. I've done some recovery, I'll send u a PM.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

In this case, the stick is registered as a USB memory, but won't initialize.

Ideas?

(yes, I have it in my possession)

Windows says that it is a memory stick that won't start.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

Try imageUSB first to backup whatever is on there. Then try a simple chkdsk /r. I got a friends USB stick back this way. And then explained to him to concept of multiple backups.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

If it's not being recognised at all, like zilch and no power, then it sounds likely be due to an electrical fault. The question you need to ask yourself now is just how valuable is the data on the stick and how many GB of data was on it?

If it is really, really important enough to spend time and money on then and you have two options to try and get it back:

1) Take the stick to a skilled computer shop or electronics engineer to see if they can see anything obvious as to why the USB stick is not getting power. It could be something they can fix with the tools/materials they have. If you can manage to buy an duplicate of that stick by googling the specific model then they can potentially also try transplanting the memory on the broken stick to the new and working stick using this procedure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_catJb73LI8

2) Send the stick to a data recovery specialist who will likely have acccess to specific techniques and equipment to try and read from the stick storage, but that will potentially set you back 200-600chf depending on the amount of data. Many do have a "no data no charge" policy https://www.datenrettung-festplatte....UaAtB4EALw_wcB

Going forward, strongly consider using a cloud solution like for example Google Drive or icrosoft OneDrive to make additional copies of your most important files and then use a strong password and also enable 2-factor authentication on your account to keep them more secure.

Good luck.
