Need help fixing a USB Stick

Alright folks, I need help in fixing my USB drive. It doesn't work. I took it to a bunch of stores, pre-corona days obviously and weren't able to help me out. Which didn't really surprise me, as their nifty USB fixing skills were limited to plugging it in, in order to then tell me, that it didn't work. Somebody suggested though, that the inner workings of the USB might have been exposed to heat.

Could anybody possibly lend me a helping hand or possibly point in the generic direction of somebody who knows what they're doing?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Need help fixing a USB drive

USB drive as in a stick or as in a harddrive with a USB connector?

I apologize for not being clearer in my initial post. Yes, I meant a USB stick.

Does it not read/write anymore but still properly recognised by the system or does system not even see it (and tried on several systems)

(I assume there is important data on it you need to retrieve)

Indeed, the system doesn't even recognize that anything is plugged in.

Check if the connector is clean and not bend or such or the copper being worn off. If that all looks clean and o.k. I'd say either spend a couple of hundreds in an attempt without any guarantee for succes by a firm taking the chip out trying to connect it directly which could work if a connection has failed, only other option is to throw it away.

It is basically a chip in plastic with some strips going directly to the connecting part besides the chip itself there is not much that ever breaks on those things. Even for me with solder stations and all such at home there is hardly anything that can be done with those things when they fail (and after a certain time/usagee they all fail)

It is clean and not bent. It has an odd design and I believe that the copper has corn off. But thank you for the suggestion!

Your positivity is plain overwhelming. I meant to blow my brains out this evening but after reading your post, I decided to start a help group for albino squirrels in distress.

BTDT.

Be happy that it didn't need to survive the quarantine!

Meanwhile, next time you are out and about, you may wish to try this new shortcut I've discovered:

Fantastic, thank you. Can you now please get off my thread, so that I can get somebody in here who knows what they're doing? Pretty please and thanks. (take a look at the book for sale thread, you may see something you like)

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

Alas, I DO know what I'm doing.

And to think, the other day you were bitching that I wasn't participating enough!

Perhaps if you put it in a sealed cave on Friday it will return to life on Sunday.

Re: Need help fixing a USB Stick

Years ago I wasn't paying attention and accidentally broke off my USB stick connection in the computer. I managed to get that bit out but of course had no way to get the data. I found a guy on eBay and for 80 bucks he got me all my data and mailed a new USB to me. Might be worth a search?

Well then, why don't you, instead of wasting my readers time, provide me with yer address and I can forward you my USB stick...you can tinker around a bit, resuscitate it and send it back to your favorite mod, no not that one, me.

Sealed cave? We're not talking about what you do with lost hitchhikers down there when nobody is looking.

Good idea, thank you 3wishes!

What, you've lost my address?

Anyway, I don't have the microsurgery stuff at home, and don't know when I will next go to the office.

Yep, the help group for squirrels sounds like a better chance for success.

Here are some ideas, but go towards the end where they discuss physical damage.

Is the system switched on?

Can you open it up and post photos?
