How to check chromebook for malware (possible hack email)

Alright, long story short, I received a nefarious email stating an old password that I've used before, that they got my login data and that I need to send money via bitcoin by tomorrow in order for them to relinquish my account. Now, the password they mentioned is old and I've changed in the multiple times since then. They mentioned that a malware is installed on my chromebook. I honestly don't think they hacked my account but nevertheless, I would still like to know whether I have malware installed. What would be the easiest way to do so?
Thanks in advance!

I got one too today. With a user and password that I didn't use in years in the header. I just deleted the mail. Maybe it was one of those ebay hacks years ago.

If you stopped using that password already there is only one smart thing to do with such email.

Delete and forget.

Re: How to check chromebook for malware (possible hack email)

it's a common con.

what happens is the website you once used got hacked and they stole the user database and passwords.

they then send emails out to everyone saying they hacked you and mention your password as proof.

I haven't seen that scam yet. Although in the last couple of months, both my wife and I both got fishing emails...

Both were the same stating something to the effect...."We have footage of you at some pron web site we recorded from your web-cam. We will forward this footage of you and the site you were logged into to your friends list on <social platform, email list, etc.> unless you pay us 1,500 CHf.."

Funny stuff, we don't have a webcam on the computer we surf pron on... wait, what?...

Seriously tho, was funny. Delete and forget.

Malwarebytes is a free software that can scan your computer for malware. I think most security programs have a malware detection feature too, such as Avast, AVG (same company), Norton, etc.

In this case, definitely delete any such message and never click on any links in it.

Almost certainly not malware. Been kicking around for a while, was much discussed here when people were thinking it was an EF breach. An announcement from EB was made here .

As it happens, my wife got one of these a couple of days ago. and although she is also an EF member the password quoted was not one she'd ever used here, so in all probability it was not even a copy oif the EF database, but part of a more widescale one discussed in a wired article here. and another article specific to the sextortion scam here.

Most of these claim to have video of people playing with themselves in front of a webcam, so I suspect the current attack it's just some opportunistic lowlifes trying to prey ion folks who've been using webcams a lot more for work meetings than normal, and perhaps aren't so au-fait with the technology, so more likely to fall for it.

We get similar emails every so often on our business email account and they quote a password haven't used in years. Been getting them for a couple of years. When we originally set up the company we used Go Daddy for web hosting and emails and I am guessing that was hacked. Those emails along with the ones from Nigeria wanting to put millions in my account go straight to the permanently delete folder. We moved from Go Daddy years ago

Re: How to check chromebook for malware (possible hack email)

i use an individual password (and often email) per site so can see exactly which ones were hacked. some have been publicised (e.g. linked in breach). some not. i suspect some sold my data as it was for a niche product (flight simulation) and i started getting very specific flight simulation spam to that particular email address.

Exactly this. I got one yesterday with a password I was using 2 years ago for a site. I guess quite a lot of people will just be scared thinking their computer could be hacked and they just send the money. But I doubt it will then stop at just one payment.

For the EF, I use "Phil_MCRismyhero69", is that a good one?

Thank you everyone for the insightful answers. I figured that it was a scam, I guess I was just surprised to see a version of an old password and I was worried whether my Chromebook were really infected of some sort.

If you still have access to your account and have recently changed the password, then they what exactly are they going to relinquish? They don't have access and they haven't locked you out of anything. Your GILF pron fetish is safe.

Make sure you sign up to 2-factor authentication on your email account if it's possible. If it's not possible then I suggest changing your email account to Gmail or Outlook Live. Avoid Yahoo!.

But you are infected! By Google and you agreed to them spying on you when you signed their T&Cs
