Driving lessons

I am half way through my driving lessons in the uk when I left for Switzerland last year
What is the process for getting a drivers license in Switzerland I don’t wanna waste all the money I spent in the Uk learning to drive

Happy Easter

Come back to Switzerland, take driving lessons here, get your first aid course done, apply for a learners permit.

Good point, especially as there are different signs etc. And keep in mind that the test cannot be done everywhere in english....

(Forgot about that, driving test was wayyyyy back, sorry)

Same here, but recall it like it was yesterday so much fun did I have.

Also don't forget about VKU and WAB courses here, together roughly another 600,-

With a set of lessons it easily amounts up to 2.000,- here.

And to answer your question, anything you've done in England already is useless here, but your money is not wasted since nobody takes away the experience you have already with driving and handling a car so that should save some money here.

Happy Easter.

Re: Driving lessons

The money you spent learning to drive, in the UK, is not wasted. I agree with Edwin: if you've learnt the basic skills of handling a car, you will quickly find your way back to driving, when the time comes.

The costs in Switzerland are rather high. Edwin set them out in post 5, above.

By the way, did you know that in Switzerland many people don't even bother to get their driver's licence, at all? Some just can't afford the fees. Or they need to prioritise something else, financially, so they postpone getting their licence.

In some other countries it is considered the normal thing to do as soon as one is legally old enough to take the test, but it doesn't work the same way, here in Switzerland. Sure, having a licence is great, but many find they just don't need it. This is, of course, more the case for those who live in the cities, where the public transport is so very good.

Besides, for most office jobs, it is not a required qualification.

Therefore, I'd recommend that, for the moment, you file away your experience, to return to later. In the meantime, set aside the [rather expensive] project of getting your licence, and focus, instead, on whatever you need to do to secure your job and to find a place to live, that you can afford.

Good luck!

Re: Driving lessons

Problem is you've learned how to drive on the wrong side of the road.

Come back to Switzerland, take driving lessons here, get your first aid course done, apply for a learners permit.
Just to put it in the right order:
- get your first aid course (Nothelferkurs) done (CHF 60 to 150)
- learn for the theory exam (CHF 0 to 70)
- apply for a learners permit (CHF 15 for the sight test)
- pass the theory exam (~CHF 40)
- get your learners permit (~CHF 40)
- do the mandatory road awarness course (Verkehrsunterricht VKU) (CHF 150 - 250)
- take driving lessons (optional) (CHF 60 - 100 / 45 min)
- do accompanied driving (a lot) (CHF 4 for a magnetic L plate)
- pass the practical exam (~CHF 140)
- get the your driving license (on probation) (CHF 40)
- do the mandatory driving course (WAB) (~ CHF 250 - 400)
- pass the probation period w/o major traffic infractions, adhere to the lower BAC. (2 years no cost)

Prices depend on canton and provider. Some are cheaper some are more expensive.
The minimum cost till you can drive on your own is around CHF 490. But it is advisable do to at least two driving lessons in form of a mock exam. Which means the minimum cost is more like CHF 640.

It doesn't take long to switch. But I understood the OP doesn't have enough money for rent and has become unemployed, so how he's suddently got the money for driving lessons, I don't know.

All the costs are here:
https://driving-instructor.fahrlehre...ructor-231.htm

TL;DR - it is going to cost thousands.
