You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorn.

but in my experience, wasps are quite easy to deter, as long as you get in early enough and it's just the queen or maybe the queen and her first couple of workers, but they are still too few to feel safe enough to get aggressive at you. Wake them up with a flashlight once every night so they can't sleep and put stuff right next to the nest and keep on moving stuff every day or so. Stuff like tinsel or mirrors annoys them quite a lot. They typically give up within two days and find somewhere else to build a new nest, with no stings or injuries to you.
Yeah, it wasn't in jest. The window has some space on the upper side (I guess the architects didn't really think it through) where they can hide very well and when I find them there's already a nest. Besides it's the window of our "office"/guest room and we don't open it that often so I can see or hear what's going on there. When they become a nuisance it's too late. It's just nasty. I forgot to ask my neighbours if they had the same "problems", probably they do but being proper Swiss they called Tierschutz or something...
Thank you for your advice.

We LOOOOOVE lavender, but they grow a LOT, and attract a ton of bees. We do plant bee-feeding plants (key to our ecosystems), but not around windows or pathways.

I'd love lavender too...but as you say not around windows.

Edit: I'll risk (again) having lavender and marigolds too (I didn't know exactly to which flowers are you referring too, I also love them) but on the terrace, which is quite big. Our kids love bees...
(in all fairness, I have never suffered from the type of allergy I have for wasps stings)

Seeing as everybody seems to have some sort of animal they're trying to get rid of, I decided to change the thread title.
Now let's see what other species fellow EFers seem to have a problem with.
I lent a high-power air rifle with a scope to a neighbor to deal with some rats at the local compost center where he works, so far he's offed a dozen or so.

Tom

Re: LiB's owl debacle or How to get rid of (insert animal of choice)

Wasps: They like hidden, secluded spaces, such as the gaps around rollerblinds.

One year we used lavendar oil (not sure if is was real essential or synthetic, found it in a second-hand shop, a little bottle, intended for a little "aroma lamp" above a candle, to make the room smell good), spattered onto household paper, and then shoved that quite high up into the gap. The wasps fled in horror, but we didn't hurt them. We found we had to repeat that a number of times over the course of a week, before their distaste was great enough for the queen to relocate.

In the following year, we did this before the wasps arrived, and they didn't choose any of the possible gaps around the windows.

Where is the trigger warning for speciesists?

Thank you, will try that too. And again, before they arrive. As for lavender oil being synthetic or real essential oil, I think it makes no difference for my purpose. Perhaps the synthetic one is even better.

Contact these people, very friendly... https://greifvogelstation.ch/

if this owl needs to be saved from firework toting EFers, I am sure they would come and take it off your hands or at the very least offer some advice how to proceed.

Aww, that was so typical Swiss. One of the reasons I didn't discuss this first with my Swiss friends, our method of dispersing the wasps would have (probably) horrified them....

Thank you for inquiring about my bird. I'm slowly suspecting that he's also an EF member and that he read the thread, because since a few days, he disappeared. Maybe because of borders opening and all, he decided to do some cross-border shopping and left for a few days, who knows.

Congrats. You can figure out if he's there by noticing the owl's particular excrements , yeah I hiked a lot in the mountains as a kid.

He'll be back with a bullet-proof/firework-proof nest with light-reflecting walls.

Ehmm, I generally refrain from wandering the premises analyzing birdpoop. . .how does owl poop for instance differ from let's say a seagul's poo?

No worries, as soon as I find an eagle or a falcon on Tutti, this here neighborhood will be owl free!

Re: LiB's owl debacle or How to get rid of (insert animal of choice)

Doves nested above my bedroom window a couple of months ago.

I probably encouraged them by feeding them sticks for their nest on the roof terrasse during those old lockdown times, while playing shadow tennis i.e. without balls. They are like retrievers, look you directly in the eye out of trustfulness and fetch the stick (but don’t unfortunately bring it back).

Will not do that again if there’s ever another lockdown, but have found great earplugs to sleep through the incessant cooing past sunrise (although, have to say that they are late starters). Will send you the link to the earplugs if interested?

Usually the rats feed off kitchen waste. Wire mesh with small-ish mesh size should work fine, and should be easy (trivial even) to put in place next time a heap is emptied.
