Any photography experts?

I've wanted to get into photography for a while, but I've been put off by the cost of equipment and the complexities once i start to read about it Particularly interested in underwater shots as I love snorkelling.

I have no idea where to start. Camera, lenses, online course, photo editing!

All I have right now is my iPhone, I did have a waterproof compact, but it just broke. Thinking of getting a go pro for the water, as housings for SLRs plus dome lenses are $$$$$

Any tips on how to get into it with out hurting my brain or my wallet?

Olympus and Panasonic do underwater compacts. Can't go too deep, about 10 meters.

My son has a go pro hero 7 black, approximately 300.- plus accessories with unbelievable shots for such a small camera, especially underwater.

I was also going to suggest a Go Pro, but I see that Hausamsee beat me to it. I've never had or used one myself, but from what I've read or have been told about them, they work very well for filming and photographing underwater.

Apparently, the models can differ a bit in terms of how waterproof they are with or without "housing" and how deep you can go with them:

I'm a qualified photographer and worked professionally as such many years ago, but after using our nephew's gopro when he visited last December, I want one! He's on Crete at the moment and has been posting great underwater videos, including some of him cliff diving with the gopro.

Golden rule for good photography - you're only as good as your eye. Please don't get hung up on expensive equipment. It's completely unnecessary to capture great images, and most of the greatest photographers in the world worked with cameras that didn't have a fraction of the finesse of your average mobile phone camera. Remember you're painting with light and get out there. Practice, practice, practice.

This is so true. You can take great shots with a reasonably priced camera. It's also worth looking at the secondhand market as well. Husband's picked up some very nice cameras over the years that have been barely used because people always seem to want the latest ones with the most features - most of which they neither need nor will ever use.

If you've got a photography store near you it may be worth going in and asking their advice and seeing what they have in the way of secondhand cameras.

This is very true, the majority of top end gear eg Leica is sold to amateurs not professionals, they cant afford to waste money.

Interestingly with a cinema camera I bought exactly 9 years ago, the body alone was $50,000 is still making money. I could have replaced it at least 4 times with 'newer/better'. I did do a sensor upgrade for $9,500 when it was 18 months old. It's still the most used camera on Netflix, hence easy to rent out.

There are tons of guides online and on Youtube, you just need to spend some time researching. Yes, it requires some effort and resulting brain-ache on your part, sorry.

If you want good underwater and land photos then the best solution is to buy a GoPro for underwater and another camera for land.

Without knowing your actual budget it's hard to make any more specific recommendations.
