Videos cameras, looking for recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations for video cameras.

Ideally not too expensive and not too bulky, but offering good value for money, easy to use but still viable under poor lighting conditions.

Anybody want to share their experiences?

Preferably not Sony as I'm not a fan of their attitude to customer service.

Re: Videos cameras, looking for recommendations

Frankly, I gave up on dedicated video cameras a few years ago having owned various meadows since the early 90s. My iPhone 11 will now produce as good a 4K video with stereo sound as a low to medium budget camera...

Re: Videos cameras, looking for recommendations

Phone cameras are good, but they fail in low light conditions. It all depends on the final use anyway. If it is for family use only then yes stick with the phone camera.

What's the goal? Security camera? There are very sensitive cameras but everything looks gray. Wildlife observation? also very sensitive but no colors.

A friend works in professional production of videos. On top of cameras he has lights, camera stabilization devices (tripods, gimbals) and the software to put everything together and even fix some problems from the original recording....and of course the knowledge.

I'd start with a phone, a gimbal and learning how to edit/correct light in the computer. Considering Swiss weather, an action camera is not an excess for any outdoor application.

Re: Videos cameras, looking for recommendations

I have a Panasonic Lumix, which is an HD digital camera, that can record video in 4K (high quality). It's very small and works well with a tripod, for stability, though it also has a stabilizer function. You just have to be sure to use a decent SD card with it, if you're recording video.

It also comes with a lot of various effects (low-key, etc.) and is overall very easy to use. There are a few different models of the Lumix, I guess, but the one I have is the DMC-TZ81. It seems to go for about 300 bucks here in CH. When I was looking for a new digital camera, the guy at Mediamarkt had suggested this one, for its price range coupled with its ability to record high-quality video, etc. He said it's one of the best ones on the market (at the time, at least).

One thing I love about it is that it doesn't require batteries. It charges (full charge in about an hour), and a full charge lasts for a very, very long time. It also has an excellent zoom function. I use to photograph the moon with it sometimes and could achieve really nice detail in the craters, etc.

Not a security camera. More something that's sufficiently lightweight that I can take it on hikes or city trips with me and spontaneously record interesting stuff that I come across, maybe make vlogs that I can edit on my computer and then post on youtube. My iphone isn't up to the job because for example if I try to use the zoom function it simply pixelates so an optical zoom would be preferable to a digital one.

I actually have a predecessor model to this. Also a Lumix with a similar shape but I think the specs are different, seeing its an older model. What is your experience with yours? I am a bit frustrated with mine because for example the zoom toggle sometimes blocks so I can zoom in but not zoom out again without shutting down and restarting the camera. It's too old to have guarantee. I removed the zoom button and cleaned the contacts and then it worked OK for a few weeks before starting again. I've now removed that button and repeated so often that the button no longer fits properly and will sometimes fall off of its own accord. The focus is also frustratingly slow. But maybe they've got a better grip on those things on the newer models?
