iPad for MacBook

I'm thinking about replacing my MacBook with an iPad Air and smart keyboard.

I'm just wondering if there will be stuff that i can't do on the iPad? I don't do much on the MacBook, Microsoft word/excel documents (will I be able to save them as pdf on iPad?) and internet stuff. I had a first gen iPad mini ages ago, and there were some things I couldn't open on it (think maybe stuff that required flash player).

Just wondering if the latest iPads are less limiting?

Re: iPad for MacBook

You can buy/subscribe to most of the Microsoft Office ‘Suite’ on an iPad. Or you can use Apple’s free office-type software to create Office files.

Re: iPad for MacBook

Flash is unsupported and will be be withdrawn from use at the end of December, so it won't matter if the iPad can run it anyway. New content using html5 or other recent engines should run on all platforms.

Re: iPad for MacBook

For Office, you would be best getting an Office 365 subscription and yes, it would a) save PDF and b) save it on OneDrive (1Tb for each family member, max 6 in total). Tip: don't pay MS CHF 110 online, get it for about 80 from Digitec (actually 79 in tandem with a Norton 360 Deluxe, on offer at the moment).

You can do most of what you want, certainly you describe. I will get an Air 4 next week when they are available. Another tip: go to the Apple store and tell them where you work, their CRM database will likely get you a discount.

Re: iPad for MacBook

I have had iPads since the 1st Gen as well as wireless keyboards. I still prefer the form factor of my MBP, as I often work with the MBP balanced on my knee(s). With the iPad, I could put the wireless keyboard on my knee(s) but then the iPad off to the left or right? Doesn't work for me. Granted, my work style might be unique and much different than yours.
From a functional POV, I never really got comfortable with using a lot of the iPad shortcuts for cut and paste, for instance, so I fumble around a bit when using iPad. But that is my personal shortcoming; nothing to do with the device, itself.
Storage is an issue, as well. I have a 1TB SSD in my MBP and 8GB of RAM. Not sure if iPad Pro is capable of that at a reasonable price point. I am still using my trusty 2015 MBP because it is the last model where you CAN add SSD/RAM/Battery. I will stick with it as long as possible.
Good luck!

Re: iPad for MacBook

one downside: if you use a USB3/Lightning connector to drive an external monitor, it looks a bit guff. Or it did on iOS13. It mirrors the screen with it's non-16:9 aspect.

There are other folio keyboard/trackpad cases that might interest you. Since the MK is something like 350.....

Re: iPad for MacBook

Magic Keyboard is actually only 319 in Apple's Store.

But you can add a 2nd generation Pencil for 129....
