Recommendation: alternatives to Photoshop

Calling all creatives out there.

I have used photoshop on and off for many years, but nowhere near enough to justify Adobe's present pricing policy, or to fully use or even understand the full range of functionality on offer.

Anybody in the same position? Any alternatives out there?

Google returns plenty of recommendations for alternatives, but doesn't really provide many useful details.

For me as a minimum I would like to see following photoshop-style functionality

- Mac OS
- ability to work with layers, including semi transparent layers and layers with filter or other transformative capability.
- smart selection and cropping capability
- ability to manage brightness curves and such in a way comparable to what Phoshop offers

Re: Recommendation: alternatives to Photoshop

In exactly the same situation.
I have found pixlr.com most usefull - you can download transparent PNG files. And its free!!
Also tried out GIMP & KRITA, but found pixlr very easy to use.

Re: Recommendation: alternatives to Photoshop

I use Affinity as an alternative to Illustrator, it's fantastic and costs next to nothing (I think a one off 50.00 CHF). They do a Photoshop alternative and I've heard great reviews from professionals.

Re: Recommendation: alternatives to Photoshop

I think the most popular app options would be Pixelmator and Affinity photo. Both have good reviews, I have been using pixelmator for a while and found it good. If I had the buy one now, I would probably go with Affinity as it is multi platform, and, as noted above, it has a proper suite with Designer and Publisher

GIMP. I use it to enhance photos in poor lightning conditions and it works fine. Wife's happy with the results Some people say it's not that intuitive, but I work with even worse software, so no complains.

I can usually get what I want from Gimp. If I can't - I ask my kids, since they're really proficient.

Re: Recommendation: alternatives to Photoshop

I tried Affinity and Luminar. The reason I chose Luminar, was that I liked that fact that it’s not a destructive editor.

Nothing, which is fine as this is the "off topic" forum.

Re: Recommendation: alternatives to Photoshop

I use Paint.Net for small stuff, it's a lot quicker and easier to handle than Photoshop which I use seldom but find good for proper photo touchup.

I like the look of Affinity for next time Photoshop force an upgrade, but is there also a good alternative to the Photoshop Organiser?
