Elon himself has indicated 2022 as a possibility for construction in GIGA Berlin, some ideas from the link below but there is no hard information at the moment.

Personally, I think they will start production in China, as I can't see how they can produce it so cheaply otherwise.

It would be a massive hit with buyers and would substantially undercut VW's ID3.

However, it is doubtful it would make much money for Tesla. This is why they and other manufacturers of EV start by making top-of-the-range models first.

The fixed costs are the killer: for a $25,000 and a $100,000 car costs are about the same but if gross profit were 5%, that $1250 per vehicle made again $5000 for the expensive ones.

British Leyland apparently lost £5 on every Mini they sold!

But it may allow Tesla to increase its market share into an area they are not in at the moment.

I have a Model 3 and an 8-year old Golf GTI for my partner. If there was a $25000-ish performance Model 2 - I'd order it today to replace the Golf...

Agree. Musk has said this is an objective of his.

At that price he would generate a pretty nice volume which would easily take care of the fixed costs - volume is usually more important than gross margin there.

Remember when Tesla talked about the Model 3 at 30000 USD? And look at what they really cost here. Laughable.

The model can of course be successful - I just don't believe it will be cheaper than the ID.3 ever.

The Supercharger network is a major draw, so I would definitely consider a Tesla if I was in the market for an ev. And increasing their volume incentivises them to build on that network.

Have you seen the new chargers on the rest areas of Swiss highways? I stopped yesterday at Inseli on the A2 beween Luzern and Zofingen and saw the 150 KW chargers for the first time. Today I'm reading that there's a plan to build around 100 of them in the most convenient places in the highways.

Good effort by Tesla, but the 150KW charging network is no longer unique. I wouldn't be surprised if the highway network is larger than the Tesla network by the end of 2021.

PS. The rastplatz near Oftfinger on the ZH direction is also under construction, a new high capacity charger there soon.
