Hey - I didn't split the thread, partikuls and consciousness both assumed or proven coexist peacefully, where I am. In the shower, tub..diluted or intense.

I think you're less confused than those who do believe in one simply because they've been told to.

Re: Consciousness, metaphysics, extentialism... (Science thread split)

…then I will tell to one of my best friend who is university professor and doctor in science, that philosophy is not anymore an science, only those that can be expressed through a formula are sciences...

…Metaphysics continues asking "why" where science leaves off. For example, any theory of fundamental physics is based on some set of axioms, which may postulate the existence of entities such as atoms, particles, forces, charges, mass, or fields. Stating such postulates is considered to be the "end" of a science theory. Metaphysics takes these postulates and explores what they mean as human concepts.
In physics, new metaphysical ideas have arisen in connection with quantum mechanics, where subatomic particles arguably do not have the same sort of individuality as the particulars with which philosophy has traditionally been concerned. Also, adherence to a deterministic metaphysics in the face of the challenge posed by the quantum-mechanical uncertainty principle led physicists such as Albert Einstein to propose alternative theories that retained determinism. A.N. Whitehead is famous for creating a process philosophy metaphysics inspired by electromagnetism and special relativity.

In chemistry, Gilbert Newton Lewis addressed the nature of motion, arguing that an electron should not be said to move when it has none of the properties of motion.
Katherine Hawley notes that the metaphysics even of a widely accepted scientific theory may be challenged if it can be argued that the metaphysical presuppositions of the theory make no contribution to its predictive success...

…Philosophy may be called the "science of sciences" probably in the sense that it is, in effect, the self-awareness of the sciences and the source from which all the sciences draw their world-view and methodological principles, which in the course of centuries have been honed down into concise forms...

Hehe.
It might be just some cheap booze though, the type of booze most uni students have intoxicated themselves with once in a while...nope, I don't want that!

What does the abbreviation PhD stand for..

Every good school has a course on philo or exams or both, it is becoming the norm, but it's been like this where I am from for ever. Other places kept their philo obligation or introduced it.

Metaphysics btw does have its formulas, so does cognition, logic, perception, probability, assumptions...you name it. It is not really known, nor part of popular science. A lot of people still think through the frame of their school subjects.

From ancient Greek, IIRC. Way before even the most advanced thinkers were really able to break down the walls of ignorance and superstition that were the norm.

These days the study of philosophy is a long way from that of the physical sciences, the historic link between them really no longer existing.

Well lots of educational establishments still have courses in Theology, and even Astrology and Homeopathy. Doesn't mean they're 'science' just because you can get a BSc in them, just as a PhD doesn't imply any knowledge of philosophy as such.

Trying to compare astrology to philosophy is very disingeneous and foolish IMHO.

As MC says, no science education is truly complete without at least some foundation in philosophy. And in contrast to "real scientists", scientists have some level of humility before the philosophical underpinnings without which any other form of science would not exist.

Can we see the thread split justified now?

Re: Consciousness, metaphysics, extentialism... (Science thread split)

…this thread remember that 25 years ago I have to work during the summers to sustain myself at College, the only place where I can find work was a Baptist Society, where in four summers I built a radio station, two churches and a child's care home, but at that time I was an punk with long hair, earrings, skull rings and always with headphones with continuous Prodigy on...the big 'chiefs' didn't spot me at the beginning, but after some time, one of them who was big in USA with lot of books edited and lots of radio programmes attended, call me for interrogation, I was 17 years at that time, he first asked for headphones to listen and after asked if I attending church...we have an long discussion of four hours, he nearly lost his radio emission...he understood that I am unprogrammable...I still worked next three summers as all societies still need people with different views and good skills...
…now I am looking to EF and understand that this forum are reflecting the today society with all of it censorship...

I find all this thread splitting rather useless because nobody stays on topic here. Ever. Besides, when there's some really uninspired thread split a whole new can of worms might open up...maybe some things are better mentioned en passant only so the threads can bounce back...Anyways. I take it some mods insist on keeping a few things here neat and clean (in their opinion) and that might seem excessive to some, but censorship? Here? That's quite a leap. People will react and sometimes vehemently oppose your views but that's normal in my opinion....up to a point of course, if people respect the forum rules. There's no need to toss around some terms that are obviously exaggerated.

If you have been born before virtual games, how would you describe life and the actions of humans? Pop culture references are bad because they're time dependent. I like video games but avoid the temptation to describe things based on games, particularly when things have existed for thousands of years and video games........50 years? If any, the video game is a reflection of life.

I am triggered hahaha

Ever heard of philosophy of science? The least I can tell is it helps to separate quackery from science and pretengineers from engineers.

Why? If everything in life in surreal, what is real? There should be something real. Unless......surreal is used as a comfort tool. I don't like something or understanding it takes a lot effort, if I call it surreal I don't have to make an effort at all
