Re: communication technique

I totally get where the OP is coming from. Unless you have lots of contact outside your 1 to 1, probably best to ignore for the time being, it will likely trail off.

Me too. As per counter measure, OP, if he does it coz he has no idea of the impact, you can't really teach a boss to become better/smarter/more diplomatic unless risking more, yourself. Let him learn through more efficient channels. Like his boss. Good morning, Clyde. So, Clyde, I got an email to see you, Clyde, asap. Can, you tell me why, Clyde?

I agree with the possible neg review coming, or worse. Hope not.

I would worry that they are trying to sympathise with your upcoming situation where you get a bad performance review.

How does your boss normally communicate with you?

Are you performing to expectations?

There is a change in the working conditions and i have some concerns.

I suspected a negative spin on the discussion. I would say it's a classic, low/zero-training manager method to create empathy.

Were you asked how you feel and what you can offer to make the best of whatever changes you're going to face?

No, i haven't been asked, but i expressed my concerns(solely medical reasons) despite his attitude and the answer was "well if you will have again such symptoms please let me know, but we have to go ahead and this change must happen."

Anyhow this is my purely personal issue and i have to find a way of fixing it.

Thank you all for your suggestions

Is that a variation of "Non, pas moi...Madaaaame".

No, I think it's more that the girls thought their names were for use by close friends and family only.

Never attribute to malice what can be explained with incompetency.

For me it looks like your boss just learned about a new technique and is now using it in every instance possible. Even every sentence. Thus overusing it which has the total opposite effect of what it should actually achieve.

It is like a child which just learned a new word, which now tries to use it whenever the chances arises. Same could be seen with Trump. He learned a new word or fact he would use it in every other sentence.
My thoughts entirely. I know I would have asked him straight, which seminary he visited lately. But that's me, most people are not that blunt.

I agree with Phil MCR, I would adopt the technique immediately. I'm quite sure it works wonders.

Which course you mean? Seminary is theological, seminar is a uni thing, courses too. Course or workshop is at work, but that's only my experience.

eeeehhm, no? Not only. Check your dictionary.
And what's the point of your question, do I need to rephrase my post for you all together?

Re: communication technique

…Formal and informal. Using a formal name is often associated with obedience and can be seen as a sign of respect. However, you must watch for an adverse reaction and understand that using a formal name may cause an adverse reaction. Informal usage of a name is typically more casual and friendly, but be warned that using an informal name may cause you to be seen as presumptuous. A suggested approach is to ask the person what they preferred to be called, thus gaining permission to use the form of their name they prefer.
Beware of overdoing it. Be careful when using a person’s name. If you use it too much, you may appear that you’re trying to manipulate them, which is likely to have the reserve effect you desired...Jodi Schulz, Michigan State University...

just do the same back but more exaggerated. try to get the name in 3 times per sentence.

"Tony, I see what, Tony, you are trying to say, Tony, but I feel, Tony, that it would be better, Tony, if we, looked at it again next year, Tony."
Passive aggressive approach? I like it.

So what you're saying is that the OP wants his boss to call him "Love" or "Sweetie".

No wonder he's upset.

I was going to say the same thing, he may have misunderstood the intention of this advice. It is also one of the techniques to ensure someone is engaged, because our brains basically light up whenever we hear our names. We've all had that moment where someone in a crowded room says our name and we instantly look for the source, even if we were previously in conversation. Or is that just my neurodivergent brain?

It would hack me off and I would instinctively respond in the exact same way. It's right up there with "I hear you, and..." or "I understand where you are coming from and it's important that we don't take any options off the table right now...". Basically that whole "don't say 'yes but', say 'yes and'" spiel. I'm at work, not in an improvisation class, Karen. But sure, you go ahead and "assess the temperature of the room in order to ensure that you can fully engage the key stakeholders going forward before you circle back to me"... So glad I don't have to deal with this type of nonsense anymore.

Re: communication technique

Is Dale Carnegie still popular/read? I have read his book in uni and wasn't impressed. One needs an infinite patience to wax lyrical about the sensibilities of various people in order to gain access or win their confidence. I'm more in favour of polite, gentle but down-to-earth approach.

It might be, but no-one wants to hear it every 2 seconds.
