communication technique

Hi All
I have had yesterday a 1to1 discussion with my manager and he used a very annoying technique of communication with me.
In almost every sentence he used my name. This pissed me off and after the half of the discussion he lost me.
What is the name of such technique? I assume is a communication strategy with a particular objective. However i couldnt find a name for it and i am really curious to find the countermeasures.
Thank you for any suggestion/idea

They are trying to engage with you, probably exacerbated by your drifting off and losing concentration!

Re: communication technique

Here's a communication technique:

Tell the boss how you feel in an objective manner. Be the role model in discussing the issue with him.

Good luck

Makes no sense. It's your name, why shouldn't they use it?

Or is it perhaps the message itself that's pissing you off? There's more to this than you're letting on, I feel.

Re: communication technique

Never attribute to malice what can be explained with incompetency.

For me it looks like your boss just learned about a new technique and is now using it in every instance possible. Even every sentence. Thus overusing it which has the total opposite effect of what it should actually achieve.

It is like a child which just learned a new word, which now tries to use it whenever the chances arises. Same could be seen with Trump. He learned a new word or fact he would use it in every other sentence.

I do not know what you imply here Ace. Look Ace, this topic has to be seen from different sides. Not just from your point of view, Ace. I think, Ace, they have a valid point. Me and you Ace, might not be offended. But, Ace, we cannot simply over look the fact that some people might be pissed off. Don't you agree Ace? Ace? Are you still here Ace?

just do the same back but more exaggerated. try to get the name in 3 times per sentence.

"Tony, I see what, Tony, you are trying to say, Tony, but I feel, Tony, that it would be better, Tony, if we, looked at it again next year, Tony."

This, too.

Maybe OP's boss doesn't realize how patronizing or so over the top it it can come across as, or a verbal tic.

I think Harward Business Review did a special on team comm and team cohesion not long ago, there was a bit on effective comm top down. It will take a little while when the 1st trials settle down to something reasonable.

We all do.

I guess some people have to experience themselves certain uhm, communication techniques in order to understand where other people are coming from. But it's OK, we can all learn.

Re: communication technique

I would worry that they are trying to sympathise with your upcoming situation where you get a bad performance review.

How does your boss normally communicate with you?

Are you performing to expectations?

Re: communication technique

Since no one has named the way of talking by saying the name slowly and loudly, I volunteer: annoyed parent of a child being a child.

When you listened to an annoyed parent saying the first and second names of the child quite slowly, it means the child just jumped into a puddle with clean clothes, dropped ice cream on other child clothes or things like that.

The boss by using OP's name a lot may be triggering some memories from the past
