Questions about drones (or quadcopters)

Hi, I just bought my first drone and have a couple of (possibly stupid, please bear with me) beginner questions, that I hope someone here can help me out with.

First of all the model I got is the upgraded JJRC X9Ps (Heron). It was easy enough to set up with my phone connected to the RC, and thanks to its sensors underneath and its capability to turn GPS on and off, I was able to test it in an indoor environment. Also worked perfect for maybe 8 seconds, before out nowhere, the lights went out and it crashed to the floor, causing the battery to come off. The connection was perfect, camera feed running flawlessly and the battery was full - how can this happen?? I mean.. wtf just happened? I am almost afraid to try again. What if next time something breaks beyond fixing..!

Another question I have is..: So the phone connects to a 5ghz wifi hotspot on the RC which in turn connects to the drone. That hotspot is open (like, no security at all). Couldn't anybody theoretically just connect to this hotspot and take control of the drone instead of me? I mean, what could I do to prevent it? (I am using a Samsung Galaxy s9+ just in case that's important).

I hope someone can help me out answering these questions. Thanks for your time.
